Let’s talk about Tuesday night’s TV!
AMERICA’S GOT TALENT: In theory, I like the idea of them showing us things in the order they film. (In theory; there still could be creative editing, I suppose, within the day.) But with a show like this, that also risks the pace feeling off, like I’d argue it did here. Starting off the whole season with a guy who cannot win….was a weird choice. Maybe it’s fun for the judges to start off with something ridiculous! But not as compelling for a television audience.
This is also a show that delights in the Golden Buzzers, and the producers may be able to guess what the judges will react to, assume who will move forward, but they can’t guarantee who actually moves them to push the button. We got two Golden Buzzers in the premiere…will we get more in a single installment in future episodes?
(I’d argue this is as complicated as a band playing a set list on tour versus playing an album in its original order. I’ve seen memorable concerts where I’ve experienced a favorite album live. But the rhythm is noticeably different and I get why that’s not the norm.)
All that being said, there were some great acts in the season premiere. I’d also argue the two that impressed me the most didn’t get the Golden Buzzer. I literally yelled “What the f—” at my screen when Zak Mirz did his magic act. (How the hell did he do that?!) And Jacqueline & Wagner were just astonishing. Talented as hell, gutsy, and so captivating.
But, yes, with the Golden Buzzer acts, I thought Jourdan Blue was the standout. I hope things go well for him.
(I felt so bad for the bird who seemed genuinely overwhelmed and scared.)
CELEBRITY WHEEL OF FORTUNE: I was anticipating a messy/bad episode given the episode felt almost like an afterthought—and it’s weird to have two episodes this week—but it was fun. It was messy, but in a good/fun way, with people actually winning at the end. So, yay for that.
DESTINATION X: I think I’m intrigued? Some of it feels needlessly complicated, but it was enjoyable. But, wow, I’m shocked Josh got out first. BIG BROTHER is a very different game, but still, this was fast. (I don’t think Rick intentionally tried to manipulate him, but I guess we’ll see how he acts going forward.)
Mack saving Ally and sending Biggy in was helpful for her game instantly, but that also felt like a move that could end up harming her long-term. We’ll see.
(Uh, the Pinocchio shop was destroyed. I hope the production team fixed it all.)
