Let’s talk about Wednesday night’s TV!

THE GOLDBERGS: The series is very much continuing on, but it certainly had a lot of series finale elements: Adam realizing he needs heart in his projects (something the real Adam F. Goldberg has done), Lainey and Barry taking a break, but the voice over promising they’ll cross paths again in another decade.

THE WEDDING SINGER tie-in was interesting. It’s a movie I love—and actually rewatched this past weekend—and it was fascinating to see so many of the scenes play into the show. But it was also a little bittersweet because SCHOOLED was hanging over the entire episode…you knew there wasn’t a real happy ending around the corner.

CHICAGO MED: Oh, yikes, the Ava thing just got 10000000000x worse. The writers have basically written her/the relationship with Connor into the tiniest of corners. It would have been one thing if she had slept with Connor’s father before they got together. Gross, icky, not great, but something that happened before they were a couple and could have been overcome. Now, it appears she lied to Connor about it and manipulated him (which led to him getting into a public physical fight with his father). It’s hard to see how he trusts her after this?

I’m a bit surprised the show is going to play with Will having PTSD. It makes sense, to a degree—and certainly that time in isolation didn’t help—but I certainly expected tension between Manstead to come from the newly-widowed father of a patient vs. him bringing a gun into their home.

SCHOOLED: The Matt Ryan twist made me laugh out loud. I don’t know why, but it did.

The pilot established a bit of the world we’ll get to know, but it really didn’t feel like we know enough yet. We haven’t met Brett Dier’s CB. It doesn’t feel like Felicia is really a character yet. So I’m really intrigued to see what episode 2 looks like. But I’m loving the ’90s nostalgia.

CHICAGO FIRE: I know a lot of fans weren’t a fan of Naomi, but the breakup felt pretty fast. Even if it was dictated by a new assignment as opposed to anger…they just went through a major trauma together. (I really loved Casey’s reaction to everyone donating to help him out, though.)

Stella and Severide’s breakup felt like a slow-motion crash, however. Hopefully, this distance gives them some time to heal, because it felt like they weren’t healthy together the past few episodes.

THE MASKED SINGER: I’m still obsessed. And I can’t freaking figure out who the Poodle is… [Here’s who was eliminated last night and all of the clues so far.]

MODERN FAMILY: Eesh, so they’re doubling down on Haley’s pregnancy by making it twins? As much as I dislike this storyline, the moment between Claire and Haley was absolutely lovely; one of the sweetest the show has done in recent years.

SEAL TEAM: Oy, Clay, your dad is not great.

CHICAGO P.D.: I fully expected Voight to figuratively bite the bullet for Antonio. Ruzek falling on his sword? More of a shock. And, oh boy, what a mess. In addition to his lie, you’d think his (only kind of secret) relationship with Upton will get dragged into the light with this lie. (Also amusing to watch this and THE ROOKIE in the same week, given both feature officers trying to hide facts about physical incidents they were involved in.)

YOU’RE THE WORST: The first time I watched the episode, I was concerned I had turned on the wrong show. It ended up being a beautifully weird installment of the series. I loved the experimenting, but I also kind of hope that when we reach the end of the road, I don’t look back on this episode and wish we had this time with our core characters instead. (OK, I’ll probably always wish I had more time with the core four.)
