SUPERNATURAL Creator Eric Kripke on His ‘Unexpectedly Emotional’ Reaction Episode 300
February 22, 2019 by Marisa Roffman
When SUPERNATURAL aired its 300th episode in February, a very special viewer watched the Winchester family have a bittersweet reunion: series creator Eric Kripke.
Kripke ran the first five seasons of the (very) long-running WB-turned-CW drama, but left in 2010 after he finished his intended arc for the show. (He’s created REVOLUTION, co-created TIMELESS, and ran the upcoming Prime Video series THE BOYS in the years since his departure.)
The writer has always been a vocal supporter of the series, but the milestone prompted tweets about the hour itself and a look back at where everything started.
As for his experience watching “Lebanon,” “it was really emotional,” Kripke admits. “Unexpectedly emotional, is what I’d say. I’m watching it and then Dad comes on. And I don’t know if the four of them have ever been in a scene together. I’m watching them all together, and what I felt was this incredible sense of warmth and closure.”
“I was only there for their infancy,” he continues. “[With the show’s recent renewal for season 15,] I was only there for one-third of the show. I was there for 33 percent of the show. But I still created them. In many ways, they’re my children. I didn’t quite realize how important it was to have Sam be able to say what he said to [his father], to have Dean say what he said. To have mom and dad to have one moment.”
“It never occurred to me what I was keeping from my characters,“ he finishes with a laugh. “The fact that Andrew [Dabb] brought them together to have this moment..after everything they’ve been through, they deserved this moment. I was really emotional, a little teary-eyed, and really glad they gave it to them.”
Kripke’s involvement in the hour was purely as a spectator, but it was important to him that he touched base with the extended SUPERNATURAL family during the milestone. “I went back and forth [with the cast and crew] on social media, but it’s mostly expressions of gratitude,” he says. “I just can’t believe how hard they work after all of these years to carry the torch forward. I’m just grateful. I feel like it was my child who grew up and went to college. I’m rooting for them, I love them, I’m cheering for them, and my feeling toward them is just gratitude.”

I loved the 300th episode. I’m 61 and tuned info Supernatural years ago. My husband and son became fans of the show and we’re from Texas as are the stars. Well done and I hope the show continues for many more years.
