SUPERNATURAL at Comic-Con: Live-Blog
July 21, 2019 by Marisa Roffman
As SUPERNATURAL heads into its final season, the cast and creative team will hit up Comic-Con one last time. Follow along for a live-blog (starting at 10:30 AM PT) of the panel…
10:39 AM: And we’re kicking off the panel with an introduction. Richard Speight Jr. and Rob Benedict are once again moderating.
10:42 AM: We’re getting a look at a special sizzle reel for the con. It’s going back to the pilot and showing, appropriately, the road so far.
10:51 AM: Sizzle reel is still going. We just got up to episode 200.
10:55 AM: Speight and Benedict are out (in matching costumes) to intro the cast and crew. Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki, Misha Collins, and Alexander Calvert as well as executive producers Andrew Dabb, Bob Singer, Brad Buckner, Eugenie Ross-Leming, and Bob Berens are here.
11:03 AM: How are the guys doing with the show ending? “It’s so mean to start with us as we try not to cry,” Padalecki jokes. He throws it to Ackles, who thanks the fans for being here. Ackles admits he’s nervous.
After Padalecki is asked by fans to take his hat off again, Collins joked that it went from being emotional to a strip tease.
11:05 AM: “It really is hard to express the takeaway from the experience,” Ackles notes. “This guy was in his early 20s, he hoofed it up to Vancouver thinking we put our lives on hold for a season, maybe two. We knew we had something good and maybe we’d get three seasons…and it never got unpaused. I’m very thankful it didn’t. It’s hard to express what we’re going to take away from that. Lifelong friends. Experience of a lifetime.”
11:07 AM: Collins wrote a goal card that he wanted to be a regular on a show that was fulfilling and become lifelong friends with his castmates. It came to pass. “I consider you guys lifelong friends,” Collins says.
“I know none of you like me,” he jokes, “but I never could have imagined what came with it would be this incredible fandom and iconic show.
11:10 AM: “Jack had a real not so great end to the season,” Calvert notes. “Jack’s journey and mine has been truly, truly incredible. I’m excited for all of these people to see this journey come to an end.”
11:11 AM: “Jared and Jensen, when you cast these shows, you can have two great actors who have no lightning in a bottle,” Singer says. He credits the duo for carrying the show, especially when there are scripts that aren’t the very best. He also credits creator Eric Kripke for leaving a great foundation, and showrunners Sera Gamble, Jeremy Carver, and Andrew Dabb for making things seamless.
11:13 AM: How do they move forward? “We don’t,” Dabb jokes. “It’s 20 episodes of clip shows.”
11:14 AM: Buckner says the final moment was “probably one of the big game-changing moments we’ve had…because there was an assumption about God. We talked about him having left the building…and the boys bought into that and believed that. But this changed everything. Suddenly you have a God who never left the building. This really messes with your entire belief system.”
Ross-Leming adds it’s like living life on quicksand. “We’re playing with each other as writers finding out what it really means. It’s the last year, so we have a chance to take chances we didn’t take before…it’s exciting for us.”
11:17 AM: “What is really exciting about the Chuck reveal is it opens up things about free will,” Berens says. Sam and Dean will struggle with what was them versus what was pre-determined. “What was them, what was this plan? The position of the show is you did save the day and claim these victories, but they’ll have to struggle with it.”
11:18 AM: “This show has been a big part of my life,” Dabb says, whose first job in television was on the show. “It’s really exciting and scary. I would guess about 30% of the people are [going to be] really happy [with the finale].”
11:21 AM: What do they want to do that they haven’t had the chance to do yet? Padalecki jokes he wants to go to a beach in Maui. Or do laundry. But, seriously, he says he’s “honored and humbled to have done so much already.”
Ackles says he wants to take the Impala to the track.
11:23 AM: What are they most proud of the legacy of the show? “This is a really unique feeling,” Padalecki says. “This is a really weird sensation…we’re not going to be here next year…the relationships I’ve been able to build. I’ve met a couple of my best friends…I met my wife, had some kids…[Ackles] and I talked about this, about how lucky we are…I’m really lucky because my friendships won’t go away. And Sam Winchester won’t go away; he’ll be a part of me forever.”
Ackles adds, “I’m really proud of the work this team has done for this long. To do a show is not easy…you see the 42 minutes we release to the masses, it’s after eight days of work [of just production]…I’m really proud of that product. After this long on a show to truly love what we do and hang my hat on, that’s what I’m going to take with this…I put in the effort, we all did. I’m thankful we can all appreciate it.”
11:27 AM: What is Collins going to take from the set? He jokes he has a cage where he’s going to put Jensen and Jared.
11:28 AM: Is Collins hoping to act again? He says yes. But, importantly, “I hope in the future, this fandom continues to function as a family after the show is over. I hope you guys continue to be a force of good and companionship in the world…I think it’s a family that’s not going to go away…we love you guys very much.”
11:30 AM: Ending with a video about the Impala, narrated by Jim Beaver. (#BabyForever.) Someone is winning Baby! (There are a number of Babys they use for the show. Someone who asked a question is going to win the car. Ackles jokes he’s pissed off about it because he doesn’t share well.
11:34 AM: Final thoughts from the panel. Singer says he realized how much he missed by not coming in earlier years. “The show will end, but the friendship and the memories will live on for as long as we’re here.” He thanks the panelists and fans.
Dabb: “It’s been an incredible privilege to work on the show…and most of us up here will never experience [anything like it] again.”
Collins: He says the guys promised they wouldn’t cry. He tells the guys and the fans he loves them.
Ackles: “It’s an amazing thing to see this many faces who appreciate what we do,” Ackles says as Padalecki cries. (Ackles is also getting emotional.) “We love you guys very much.”
Padalecki: “I’m the luckiest guy in the planet, my cup runneth over, I’m going to miss you.”
