THE ROOKIE: Afton Williamson Says She Left the Series Due to Racial Discrimination, Sexual Assault
August 4, 2019 by Marisa Roffman
Former THE ROOKIE star Afton Williamson is alleging she left the ABC series due to “[r]acial [d]iscrimination/[r]acially [c]harged inappropriate comments,” as well as sexual harassment and assault. ABC reps have not responded to a request for comment.
Williamson, who played Talia Bishop, shared her issues, via an Instagram statement, with the head of the show’s hair department, showrunner Alexi Hawley, and an unnamed guest star.
Williamson is the second performer to leave the series; Mercedes Mason was written out of the show in the first season.
UPDATE: ABC Studios has sent this statement as a response to the allegations: “The allegations involve a production from Entertainment One. In late June, eOne made us aware and informed us that they launched an investigation that is ongoing. The safety of working environments is a top priority for us, and we take this matter very seriously.”
UPDATE, Tuesday, August, 8: Williamson shared a second Instagram post, naming the people who she alleges assaulted and harassed her. “This season on The Rookie, I was sexually harassed by fellow actor Demetrius Grosse. I was Racially Bullied and Discriminated against and Sexually Assaulted by Hair Department Head Sally Nicole Ciganovich.”
