About Last Night…THE VOICE and PRODIGAL SON
October 1, 2019 by Marisa Roffman
Let’s talk about Monday night’s TV!
THE VOICE: The auditions have felt off this season, with a lot of lackluster (or just plain fine) performances in the first week, but it felt like we got three great potentials in last night’s episode: Mendeleyev, Marybeth Byrd, and Kiara Brown were my favorites, with Melinda Rodriguez also having an impressive audition.
I didn’t love the extended “Don’t Speak” gag, though. It’s one thing to do it once. It’s another to do it with a shorter audio gag (the “Kelly Clarkson!” scream from 40 YEAR OLD VIRGIN certainly felt like it was less time). But it’s not only rude to the coach(es), it’s disrespectful to the contestant trying to make up their mind.
Also, if Blake thought Kelly blocked him earlier in the episode and he actually wanted the person, why wouldn’t he turn THEN so she’d have burned it? The block only counts if the person actually turns around, so why not
PRODIGAL SON: It speaks to the tone of the show that I was genuinely unsure for a moment about whether they’d be killing off (one-off) kids. A lot of shows hesitate to take that step, and it felt like maybe this would be dark enough to do it. (I’m not upset they didn’t, nor did I need them to. I was just surprised, when I was watching it, that I actually believed they might pull that trigger.)
PRODIGAL SON was one of my favorite pilots of the fall, so I was really happy that the quality held up week to week. I can’t wait to dive more into this twisted world.
