THE MASKED SINGER, ONE CHICAGO, SEAL TEAM

THE MASKED SINGER: The Panda in the “Return of the Masks: Group C” time period premiere episode of THE MASKED SINGER airing Wednesday, Oct. 2 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT) on FOX. © 2019 FOX MEDIA LLC. CR: Michael Becker/FOX.

Let’s talk about Wednesday night’s TV!

THE GOLDBERGS: I loved that Murray was the one who was actually most reluctant to have Barry and Erica leave the house. It would have been very obvious if Beverly had pulled a move like not sending in the check; for Murray to realize he “wasted” years just waiting for his kids to be gone was very sweet.

THE MASKED SINGER: So many cute costumes being eliminated!! But at least it was another impressive name who was outed.

CHICAGO MED: Um, I never thought about what a liability it is for Maggie to stay in the ED. She’d clearly never hold it against the hospital if she got sick, but that’s a heck of a chance to take while secretly fighting cancer. Someone (else) has to find out in the next episode or so, huh?

Hey, that was a lot of unexpected time with FIRE’s Casey. And given the jump in the premiere of FIRE, this probably occurred during the time we didn’t see. (Though trying to keep track of all the timelines might be a fool’s errand.)

SCHOOLED: I obviously loved the FRIENDS references. What quasi-concerns me at this point is the thread of Barry/Lainey. The two are very cute together, but it’s hard to write to a relationship where one actor will very rarely be on (and the character is in another decade). I don’t want them to break up, but it already feels like they’re having to justify a lot for how they’re staying together.

SEAL TEAM: The episode, partially shot in Serbia, was gorgeous. But the most touching bit was Jason’s voice over, talking about the numbers in his phone. The show is in no way immune to loss, but it feels like we’re gearing up for another big one.

CHICAGO FIRE: Well, Brett came back much faster than I anticipated. (Obviously she was coming back, but if they were going all in, I figured they’d keep her away for 3-4 episodes.)

Gallo should be an interesting addition to the group, and Severide making a case for him to Boden was very sweet.

Oh my God, I can’t wait to see Trudy’s changes to Molly’s. (SAVE THE RADIOACTIVE CHERRIES.)

MODERN FAMILY: The talking fridge reminded me of THE SIMPSONS’ Halloween installment where the digital house falls for Marge. And needless to say, it made me laugh a lot.

ALMOST FAMILY: Here’s the thing: I am all for questionable characters. Anti-heroes, villains can be compelling characters and are part of great television. The problem comes when shows don’t realize or acknowledge their villainous characters are villains. A medical rapist? A FREAKING VILLAIN. Especially in a story told in 2019. Trying to be a heartwarming story about people bound together by an egomaniacal man who decided he should be the one to provide the genetic material is gross on every level. There could have been a really good, compelling story here had they acknowledged the bad actions or really, really dug into what this does to the women vs. them being like, oh, family!!!

(Yes, I’m aware it’s a remake of another series.)

STUMPTOWN: I appreciate backstory, but I almost wish we had waited a few more episodes to dig deep into Dex and Grey’s history. (Also the car’s origin story.) We’re still learning about the show, as a whole, and that feels like a thing you do in episode 8, 9, when the rest of the foundation is a bit more set. But it’s also possible they’re doing this every week and we’ll just have flashbacks.

CHICAGO P.D.: Atwater’s undercover assignments are always a bit of trouble, but Vanessa feels like she could be fun to have around.
