About Last Night…DEPUTY and THE PALEY CENTER SALUTES LAW & ORDER: SVU
January 3, 2020 by Marisa Roffman
Let’s talk about Thursday night’s TV!
DEPUTY: I enjoyed the pilot. The dynamic between Bill and Brianna’s dynamic felt unique and fun, with enough fun (platonic) banter to keep me engaged. Bill’s home life also felt supportive and stable, which also feels like a relative rarity in this genre. Will it stay that way? Who knows. But I was intrigued enough to keep with the show for the foreseeable future.
THE PALEY CENTER SALUTES LAW & ORDER: SVU: NBC and Paley have teamed up for a number of specials honoring shows, but nothing has been quite as ambitious as the SVU one: THE GOOD PLACE’s run was much, much, much shorter, and WILL & GRACE’s was early enough in the revival that things weren’t as complicated. SVU…has 21 seasons. The amount of current and former series regulars they were able to get to speak to the show’s impact was impressive, as was the eclectic amount of former guest stars who spoke to their time on the show. The special could have easily been two hours—they didn’t even touch on any of the show’s Los Angeles and in New York Paley panels over the years—but given the restrictions, it was really impressive with what they were able to pull off.
