NBC at TCA: Executive Session Live-Blog
January 11, 2020 by Marisa Roffman
NBC Chairman Paul Telegdy is at the Television Critics Association to talk to reporters about NBC’s current and upcoming slate.
Follow along for the live-blog…
9:10 AM: We’re starting off with an NBC sizzle reel.
9:11 AM: Amy Poehler is here! She’s pretending to be NBC’s communication EVP.
9:13 AM: Poehler and Tina Fey are hosting the GOLDEN GLOBES! MAKING IT has also been renewed.
9:14 AM: Telegdy has now taken the stage and is touting NBC’s hits. He says BROOKLYN NINE-NINE is the #1 comedy on Hulu. GOOD GIRLS is the #1 acquired show on Netflix.
9:17 AM: Telegdy says the 532 scripted shows are just a portion of what they’re competing with.
9:19 AM: NBC has announced a new project called THE NEW WORLD, a “bold new look” at the Americas. Will air in 2024 after the Olympics. There’s a gorgeous sizzle reel filled with animals and nature.
9:21 AM: THE VOICE and LITTLE BIG SHOTS have new energy with their new additions, Telegdy says. (Nick Jonas for the former, Melissa McCarthy for the latter.)
9:25 AM: Jimmy Fallon will host the new series THAT’S MY JAM.
9:27 AM: NEW AMSTERDAM has been renewed for three seasons.
9:28 AM: The upcoming KENAN series will be moved to next season.
9:29 AM: The Rock is here via Skype, but there are some technical difficulties. Nahnatchka Khan pitched a show called THE YOUNG ROCK, which is now a straight to series order, which will also star Dwayne Johnson as the narrator.
9:32 AM: They’re still looking to do musicals, but nothing announced yet.
9:35 AM: “We proudly embrace making shows better,” Telegdy says. He says they’re in the middle of an investigation with AMERICA’S GOT TALENT. They want to make the workplace environment the best it can be.
9:39 AM: “We’re in the middle of knowing very soon…of course DAYS OF OUR LIVES is going to carry on…I know there will be good news for the fans.”
9:41 AM: They defend how they launch ZOEY’S EXTRAORDINARY PLAYLIST, because it’s a younger-skewing platform. Within a week of its premiere, it’ll be a 2 rating, NBC says. (This is similar to how GLEE launched.)
9:46 AM: People are “always looking to be better,” Telegdy says of SNL’s recent hiring someone with a past of racist comments. He’s wary of totally vetting comedians given free speech.
9:48 AM: A lot of Peacock’s offerings will be revealed next Thursday.
9:50 AM: Telegdy acknowledges he’s not involved in the guild negotiations. They’re preparing in case there might be a strike, but “things seem quite peaceful.”
