PRODIGAL SON Exclusive Clip: Watch the Opening Moments of the Winter Premiere
January 17, 2020 by Marisa Roffman
After a chilling fall finale kidnapping, PRODIGAL SON’s 2020 run kicks off with Malcolm Bright (Tom Payne) in very, very bad shape.
“It is a strange show when our photos—that are shown to get people to watch!—are really disturbing,” PRODIGAL SON co-creator Chris Fedak says with a laugh. “It really gives you an idea of what we’re doing here.”
With the Junkyard Killer (Michael Raymond-James) determined to get some time with Bright, things get twisted fairly fast. And for Bright, who is frequently teetering on the edge of being a functioning human, this encounter could prove to be a pivotal moment.
“It’s going to push him over the edge,” Fedak says. “I think that the question for us is where is that edge [for Bright] and what does it mean? And how many edges are there? And I think for Malcolm—and Tom’s performance—is that there are really a lot of really cool edges. It’s a very exciting episode that pushes him to the very limit…and even beyond it.”
“It’s exciting, it’s thrilling,” he continues. “We have this psychological cat and mouse game [between him and the Junkyard Killer] and they’re wonderful together. It is weird, it is strange. There’s something profoundly lonely about being a serial killer. This is not something you can easily talk about somebody else with. Michael Raymond-James’ Junkyard Killer has this yearning for a connection. And that’s something that we’ve leaned into. It’s fascinating.”
Originally, the episode was intended to be the fall finale, but the cliffhanger in episode 10 inspired them to end their 2019 run an hour early. “For us, it’s psychologically devastating,” Fedak says. “It’s a really big step for where his character is going.”
The episode, which also marks the first time Michael Sheen’s Martin and Lou Diamond Phillips’ Gil, interact also has a dark moment for a person on the outside: “[Martin] is absolutely certainly his son is dead,” Fedak teases. “Imagine Michael Sheen reacting to that.”
