About Last Night…THE VOICE and SONGLAND
May 12, 2020 by Marisa Roffman
Let’s talk about Monday night’s TV!
THE VOICE: A much, much, much, much better produced episode of television than the first live installment. I really appreciated they didn’t go completely overboard with the filters—for the most part—and just let the contestants sing. (Cammwess was probably the best of the night?)
It was a little more jarring to have the non-contestants performing (James Taylor felt a little random for this week, even if he was the Mega Mentor), and I know this makes me #old, but the Doja Cat performance…was a lot. And felt so clearly overproduced/clearly not sung live that it was a bit of a bummer.
SONGLAND: The Julia Michaels episode was arguably the one I was most intrigued by this season, on paper, because Michaels is such an accomplished writer, which makes her take on the show inherently different than those who are more casual with writing music.
I am surprised by the song she chose—my personal pick was “Numb,” but I thought she’d choose “Sad Girls”—but it’s hard to not be overjoyed for Keegan Bost who seemed just so genuinely overwhelmed and thrilled by his victory.

Keegan seems like such a sweetheart, so happy his song was chosen! I thought bringing in OSTON as a female singer really helped sell the song to Julia.
