Fox Renews PRODIGAL SON
May 21, 2020 by Marisa Roffman
PRODIGAL SON has been renewed for a second season, Fox announced.
“From the moment PRODIGAL SON premiered, fans have been captivated by the astounding performances turned in by Tom Payne and Michael Sheen, as they go head-to-head in one of most unique family relationships on television,” said Michael Thorn, President, Entertainment, for FOX Entertainment, in a statement. “Adding to these searing dynamics are the equally compelling portrayals from Bellamy Young, Lou Diamond Phillips, Halston Sage and the entire cast in a brilliant premiere season as told by Chris Fedak and Sam Sklaver. We’d like to thank our friends Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter, and everyone at Warner Bros. Television for helping make a series that left everyone wanting more, and we’re thrilled to have PRODIGAL SON return for our 2020-21 slate.”
The series also stars Aurora Perrineau, Frank Harts, and Keiko Agena.
The drama left off with one heck of a cliffhanger, as Ainsley (Halston Sage) brutally killed Nicholas (Dermot Mulroney), the man who had been tormenting her family. (Due to production needs, they filmed the two-part finale out of order, so the season ended as the showrunners always envisioned; they hope to work the not-yet-produced cases into season 2.)
“It’s going to fundamentally change who her character is,” co-creator Sam Sklaver teased after the finale. “But all the questions we’ve asked all season about how much is Malcolm like his father, now we’re going to be able to explore all of that from his sister’s point of view. I’m so excited to do that with her and with the rest of our group.”
PRODIGAL SON will also be placing Martin (Sheen) in a gen pop in season 2. “We’re going to see Martin in a different world than what he’s been in,” Sklaver previewed. “And it’s not necessarily a world that he won’t enjoy or dare I say even thrive in, as scary as that may sound. Seeing Martin amongst the prison population is one [story] that’s very exciting for us to tell.”
