NBC Orders Social Distancing Comedy CONNECTING
June 26, 2020 by Marisa Roffman
As networks figure out how to put on a fall schedule amidst the widespread production shutdown, NBC has ordered a comedy that is leaning into the times.
The network has picked up CONNECTING, straight-to-series, about a group of friends who are “trying to stay close (and sane) through video chats as they share the highs and lows of these extraordinary times.” The eight-episode first season is from Martin Gero (who created the just-ending BLINDSPOT) and Brendan Gall.
NBC has been cautious with its approach to new shows, with only LAW & ORDER: SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT spinoff LAW & ORDER: ORGANIZED CRIME getting a greenlight this month. (A number of pilots that were in the works pre-pandemic are still in the mix.)
As of now, NBC has an optimistic fall schedule, with the network penciling in most of its scripted slate returning. The network also has new shows MR. MAYOR, KENAN, YOUNG ROCK, THAT’S MY JAM, TRUE STORY, and SMALL FORTUNE on tap for midseason.
