THE ROOKIE: Ali Larter is Open to a Season 3 Return
July 20, 2020 by Marisa Roffman
When THE ROOKIE ended its sophomore season, Nolan (Nathan Fillion) was hit with a double whammy: he was set up so it looked like he was a dirty cop, and his rekindled relationship with Grace (Ali Larter) came to an end when she decided to give her marriage another chance for the sake of her kid.
“Nolan and Grace, she closed the door on him,” THE ROOKIE showrunner Alexi Hawley said after the finale aired. “Does he give up on that? And if she decides that she wants to change [her mind]—which I’m not saying she will, but just as an idea—can they come back from this? Or is it over? I don’t know the answer to that, honestly, right now, but there’s a lot of potential there.”
With production still primarily shut down—and Los Angeles at risk for shutting down entirely—Larter admits whether she returns to THE ROOKIE for its third season is “deeply up in the air.”
“I was only supposed to do a couple episodes,” she shares. “I sold my own show I’m executive producing and starring in, and so I was able to work on [THE ROOKIE] while, at the same time, developing my project. And it ended up turning into like 13 episodes.”
“That’s what’s interesting about this business,” she continues. “You never know where things are going to lead, but you have to go always be prepared and try [your] hardest. With that experience, it just continued to unfold in a way that was really positive. I loved being part of the show. And now, all the pilots are pushed—they have to shoot the pilots that haven’t even been shot for this year before they get to the next round.”
If the timing can work out—and the show wants to bring Grace back—Larter is game to return.
“It was such a great experience,” she gushes. “I loved working with Alexi, I loved working with Nathan. The cast and the crew were incredible. I think that there are, especially now, places they can go with Grace [as a doctor], if they’re going to bring in anything that has to do with COVID and with all the difficult things that is happening within the world of police reform.”
