THE SIMPSONS’ Al Jean Picks His Favorite ‘Treehouse of Horror’ Segments
October 30, 2020 by Marisa Roffman
With THE SIMPSONS’ “Treehouse of Horror” airing its 31st installment on Sunday, November 1, the long-running animated comedy will have told nearly 100 mini-stories, ranging from original tales to parodies of beloved horror tales.
But picking favorite installments within the episodes isn’t an easy task, even for THE SIMPSONS executive producer Al Jean.
“There’s two that I really like,” Jean admits. “One is the election one where Kang and Kodos are Clinton and Dole.”
In “Citizen Kang” (which was a part of “Treehouse of Horror VII”), Homer is abducted by aliens Kang and Kodos. In a quest to gain power, the duo kidnap presidential candidates Bill Clinton and Bob Dole, impersonate them, but even after the space creatures are unmasked, they still end up getting to take over the human race thanks to the election. (“It’s a two-party system—you have to vote for one of us.”)
The other installment Jean points to is the show’s homage in “Treehouse of Horror XIX” to “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown,” appropriately titled “It’s the Grand Pumpkin, Milhouse.”
“We had this really horrifying pumpkin going around killing everybody,” Jean says with a laugh, as the titular pumpkin sought revenge when it realized how humans treated pumpkins during the Halloween season. “If somebody said to me, ‘I’m going to show you two right now’ those are the two I would pick.”
