ZOEY’S EXTRAORDINARY PLAYLIST Boss Teases the Show’s Most Ambitious Act Yet

As Zoey (Jane Levy) settles into the changes in her life—new position at work, new relationship, new family dynamics—ZOEY’S EXTRAORDINARY PLAYLIST pulls off one of its most ambitious scenes ever in the Tuesday, January 12 episode.

“Every episode of the show, we try to do something inventive and creative that we haven’t done before,” creator Austin Winsberg explains. “In episode 2, we have an entire act that’s basically a one-act play between Zoey and Max. We rehearsed for two weeks, like [you would] a one-act play. And there are multiple musical numbers in this one act. So I’m particularly proud of that.”

And, yes, “Zoey might sing in an unexpected way during that act,” he teases.

After keeping Zoey’s singing to a minimum in season 1, the show has found a few new ways to utilize Levy’s talents—while sticking to the rules of the show—“Zoey herself has three musical numbers in episode 3,” Winsberg previews. “Zoey has a big musical number in episode 5. So one of the things is also always trying to think of ways that we can get Jane singing and dancing on the show, too.”

Also ahead in season 2? A gaggle of fun guest stars. “Jee Young Han comes in for several episodes as Emily’s sister who comes in to help with the baby. And Felix Mallard comes in as Zoey’s neighbor, who she used to babysit as a kid growing up. And Chip Zien, who is like a Broadway legend, came in to play Max’s father, which is really, really exciting to me.”
