CHICAGO P.D.: Marina Squerciati Previews an ‘Explosive Change’ for Burgess

Almost a year after CHICAGO P.D.’s Burgess (Marina Squerciati) miscarried while on the job, the lingering effects of the traumatic loss are still playing out on-screen.
“Burgess has suffered a real trauma, and everybody reacts to trauma differently,” Squerciati explains in the video below. “And…routine has become the most important thing to her. I almost feel like she’s trapped in routine, because it’s safe. And the only thing that’s going to get her out of it is a real incredibly explosive change, which is what’s going to happen.”
Earlier in the year, Burgess found herself drawn to a young girl, Makayla (Ramona Edith Williams), whose family was killed. At the time, CHICAGO P.D. executive producer Rick Eid shared “that bond stirs up lots of emotions connected to the miscarriage…It also stirs up her desire to, some day, become a mother.”
With Makayla returning in the Wednesday, February 3 episode, “In Your Care,” Squerciati admits, “I think that it was a case and she [initially] moved on. [Her reappearing] is a real big surprise.”
