CHICAGO P.D. Post-Mortem: Marina Squerciati on Burgess’ Life-Changing Decision

CHICAGO P.D.’s Burgess (Marina Squerciati) is a mom!
With young Makayla (Ramona Edith Williams)—whose family’s murder was an Intelligence case earlier in the year—looking for a home, Burgess stepped up to take in the girl, with the intention of keeping her long-term.
But the move was a bit bittersweet, with Burgess’ ex, Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger), warning her that this might be a moved based from trauma after losing their child on the job a year ago.
“I don’t think it’s her thinking clearly, but I don’t think that that robs her at the agency of the decision,” Squerciati explains. “In that she’s doing it and it’s a thing that I think she’ll love and it’s wonderful. But I think it’s hard for her to think clearly. I think she has a connection with the little girl. I think that she is missing something and those two things go hand in hand. And, to me, that’s okay.”
While Squerciati isn’t clear how long this arc may last, it certainly seems like it’ll be around for the foreseeable future. “I don’t know what it means long-term, like, if in season 20…Makayla is going to be with me,” she says. “But I do know they really want to—and I think it’s wonderful—tackle motherhood within the department. Motherhood within policing, motherhood within a job in general, but in a dangerous job. So I think Makayla will be with Burgess for, hopefully, a long time. Because that’s a dish we haven’t really served before and I think it could offer some really interesting elements to the show.”
Of course, complicating matters for Burgess is her off-on relationship with Ruzek. The duo slept together in “In Your Care,” with Ruzek admitting he wanted to resume their romance—while she countered she wanted to do the whole marriage-and-kids thing with someone, someday.
In Squerciati’s mind, Burgess was thinking of some unknown, to-be-met man when she pictured those things. So what would it take for Burgess to view Ruzek as a serious romantic prospect? “I think he has to do something serious,” she says. “Everybody puts so much on his integrity, but he hasn’t done anything. We have great relationship and we talk a lot…He proposed to me when I was pregnant. It’s all like reactive and not proactive, I would say.”
Indeed, the duo have a big fight coming up: “It’s not rose petals quite yet,” Squerciati teases. “It’s a bumpy road.”
