The SUPERMAN & LOIS Team Preview the ‘Grounded’ Family Drama

The ARROWverse expands with SUPERMAN & LOIS, as Clark (Tyler Hoechlin) and Lois (Elizabeth Tulloch) have to juggle their work lives—as Superman and an award-winning reporter, respectively—with raising two teen sons.

“Tonally, from the first conversations [executive producer] Greg Berlanti and I had, it was really how do we make this, how do we make Superman, in general, different?” showrunner Todd Helbing said during the show’s recent TCA panel. “We talked a lot about shows like EVERWOOD and FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS and [it’s] really a family show, a family drama that had Superman in it.”

“Tonally…whenever you do any of these shows, you want to make them slightly different,” he continued. “So we just approached this as much as we could like a feature, from the aspect ratio, to the cinematography, to the look, everything, the design of the house, the farm. We’re competing with these shows on cable streamers and cable networks. And we want to do that and to be able to offer the audience something on an equal quality.”

Prior to SUPERMAN & LOIS, the duo had made a handful of appearances in the ARROWverse shows, as Superman and Lois were called in to help with various problems, including the major CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS crossover, which altered the timeline. (Which is responsible for the couple having teen sons rather than a toddler.)

The down-to-Earth element of the show was also what appealed to its stars. “I think part of what I’m hoping audiences respond to in our show is that this couple, even though she’s this dynamic journalist, and even though he’s Superman, are incredibly relatable and they’re dealing with a lot of the same issues that normal people deal with, whether it is lost jobs or having hormonal teenagers who are pushing back against us at every turn,” Tulloch noted. “It should—and I think it does—feel really, really grounded—like Superman and Lois Lane could be your next-door neighbors.”

“[Playing Clark is] something that I’ve been lucky enough to be playing for a few years now,” Hoechlin, who made his debut in a 2016 episode of SUPERGIRL, added. “So, it does feel very new, and at the same time familiar. But it’s been an honor and a privilege to do it from day one and very excited about doing it now and telling a completely different story than we’ve seen with these characters before.”

But as the iconic couple take on life’s curveballs, they continue to have each other.

“For Clark and Lois, one of the reasons they moved to Smallville is because they realize that they have been possibly prioritizing the wrong things—their careers,” Tulloch said. “The kids are kind of getting a little out of control and they need help, and they think that moving them to a small town with fewer distractions than Metropolis will be good for them. One of the cool things about the way Tyler and I play Lois and Clark is, is that our relationship is one of mutual respect and admiration. And we treat the boys the same way.”
