NEW AMSTERDAM’s Ryan Eggold Previews Max’s Search for a ‘Fundamental Kind of Change’ in Season 3

When NEW AMSTERDAM’s third season kicks off on Tuesday, March 2, the medical drama takes the story back to the very start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We really start by trying to paint a picture of that journey that our frontline health care care workers have been…fighting for so many months,” Ryan Eggold (who plays Dr. Max Goodwin) explains in the video below. “And particularly how intense it was at the beginning when we just we didn’t know as much and we were totally overwhelmed by it and everything.”

“So we begin our season kind of over the hump of the intensity of that experience, but not out of the woods,” he continues. “Looking to the light on the horizon trying to figure out where do we go from here, how do we get back to the new normal, how do we come back stronger, and build back up from here in a good way?”

But for Max—whose defining question is “How can I help?”—living through a global pandemic where even he has his limits could lead to a pivotal shift for him going forward.

“He’s realizing that he certainly can’t do it all on his own and that sometimes there’s no easy fix or quick fix or no charming line or way to make the situation better-you just have to go through it,” Eggold says. “I think he’s starting to shift that perspective to ‘What needs to be dismantled? What isn’t working that we need to take down to build back up?’ He’s looking for more fundamental kind of change, I think.”
