CHICAGO P.D. Post-Mortem: Tracy Spiridakos on Upton’s Big Hour, that Upstead Shift
April 7, 2021 by Marisa Roffman
[Warning: This post contains spoilers for the Wednesday, April 7 episode of CHICAGO P.D.]
After contending with a case that hit close to home—and a missing young girl—CHICAGO P.D.’s Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) was forced to
Upton frequently butted heads with Voight (Jason Beghe) during the hour, as she was determined to save the young girl—even if it meant going about it in unethical ways. (Her excuse: “We’ve crossed worse lines before.”)
Ultimately, Voight made her go about things the right way, and the team was successful…and Upton opened up, a bit, to her boss.
“What I thought was really great about this episode is that if Hailey had broken the rules, she would have ultimately lost,” Spiridakos said via email. “The case was solved by not using ICE and instead going about it the right way which lead to them finding the little girl. I like that the writers gave her the opportunity to grow and I look forward to seeing how this will effect her choices going forward.”
The hour was also a big one for her relationship with Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer). Though her partner declared “I love you” early in the hour, leading Upton to bolt from bed, she also opened up about her fears and declared her love for him, too.
“This is the first time where the guy hasn’t left after seeing this fractured side of her,” she said. “This is the first real love story for her and while it’s scary, I also think she feels safe for the first time in her life.”
“I’m excited to continue exploring her past and to learn more about her family,” she continued. “So much of her is a mystery. I also had a really great time exploring this vulnerable side of her, I’d like to see more of that. She’s a tough woman, it’s nice to see her soft side from time to time.”
What did you think of the hour?

I do think Adam also got to see that “fractured” side of Hailey, in episode 6.06, and still stuck around, but maybe that’s just me. Anyways, kudos to the writers, who took their time to build it from scratch and tell us an awesome everyday love story. Let’s see if they keep this up and don’t mess with it, or break it.
I figure something was wrong with Hailey but I’m
to hear that she loves Jay was able to work
things out with him at the end, I sure hope that they
don’t become like Adam and Kim’s relationship toxic
and full of drama that was a mess with those they
needed to break up for good. I hope that the writers really
realize that Adam and Kim don’t deserve each other but deserves to be in other relationship besides them. To should
get Kevin and Kim together romantically instead or have Kim and Adam date someone from Med or Fire maybe anyone else but each other.
I don’t like Upton ending up with Halstead. He’s a righteous guy. I Think in my opinion she can be too harsh. The time she got the CI of Voight murdered. I know he deserved to be in jail. But she isn’t sweet to be with halstead. Ya love Kim and Adam though
We would like to see Angel Bush come back, her and Jay were the perfect couple!!! We love her, upton is ok but it seems strange for jay to be with her after Adam had her first
