The PRODIGAL SON Bosses, Bellamy Young, and Lou Diamond Phillips on the Shifting Gil and Jessica Dynamic
April 20, 2021 by Marisa Roffman
As PRODIGAL SON’s Jessica (Bellamy Young) sets out to pen her memoir, she debates leaning on Gil (Lou Diamond Phillips) as a resource.
The duo’s relationship has been strained this season, as they seemed to be taking a step forward in their relationship—only for Jessica to overhear Dani (Aurora Perrineau) warning Gil to be careful.
“After that conversation with Dani in the hospital, I think it held a mirror up to her,” Young admits. “And it showed her all her own fears: that she is not lovable, that she is cursed, that she will always be alone. I think because she loves him so much, she thinks she’s doing the most loving thing by keeping him away.”
But as the duo find themselves back together, sparks fly.
“Jessica had so much hope, because there’s such a shared history and a gentleness,” Young notes. “When she’s with Gil, she laughs. And he loves Malcolm the way she loves Malcolm; there was just so much hope there. And she has the worst taste in men, but there was the thought that maybe I could be safe, protected, laugh, and I could share things with someone who is a good guy.”
“That is not done; that is not done by half,” Phillips adds. “There are other twists and turns coming. And what I love about it is they do have feelings for each other, they do care about each other. It’s about all the external [elements] that are pushing them one way or the other in their lives. And the fact that you no idea how complicated, how messy it’s going to become [if they take that step]. But what they cannot deny is that they have this attraction and they have this chemistry. And so I think the writers are doing a lovely job of keeping us on that tightrope.”
Which leads to an unexpected moment in the Tuesday, April 20 hour, “The Killabustas.”
“It’s a relationship that’s been through a lot,” PRODIGAL SON co-creator Chris Fedak says. “They’ve been friends. They’ve been close for years and years. And they have a special relationship. And it’s something that was definitely affected at the beginning of this year. But as we kind of go further into the season, and things get really screwed up, friends are going to need to come together for each other. We’re going to see that with Gil and Jessica. Also, we have by far the most at ’80s-ed out dance moment between the two of them in episode 9.”
And, yes, co-creator Sam Sklaver says, that dance tease is “pretty literal.”
“There’s a car, there’s a dancing…with longing looks,” Fedak teases.
