CHICAGO P.D. Post-Mortem: Marina Squerciati on Burgess’ Big Makayla Decision and Burzek’s Future

[Warning: This post contains spoilers for the Wednesday, May 5 episode of CHICAGO P.D.]
As Burgess (Marina Squerciati) contemplated the realities of being a cop and a single mother on the Wednesday, May 5 episode of CHICAGO P.D., she came to a decision: if something happened to her, her ex-boyfriend/still best friend Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) should get custody of Makayla (Ramona Edith Williams).
And while it seemed like an easy decision for Burgess, Squerciati admits in the video below she had some questions about it.
“I called the writers,” she says. “I was like, ‘What about my sister? What about my parents?’ And they explained that my sister suffered her own trauma and probably wouldn’t be in a good place to do that. And that it appears…[in the recent] therapy session, they asked LaRoyce [Hawkins’] character…what do you consider the Intelligence unit? And he said, ‘My family.’ And they said, ‘And everyone else?’ He says, ‘Coworkers.'”
“I feel like that’s what’s so great about the team that Voight assembled: they’ve become this family,” she continues. “So I think it’s almost like…she’s closer to her team than she is her family at this point.”
But, she acknowledges, that poses its own problems. “[It] is also kind of dangerous that they’re all sort of so committed and intertwined with each other,” she says. “That actually comes to a head in the season finale. Alliances will be tested.”
While Ruzek is her parenting backup, the decision won’t thrust the former couple back together.
“I think she really needs focus on herself and her kid,” Squerciati says. But all hope is not lost: “I think that Burgess and Ruzek will ultimately, at some point, get together, because there is so much love there. But not right now.”
