LAW & ORDER: ORGANIZED CRIME: Peter Scanavino on the Shadow Trial Gamble, the Shifting Carisi and Stabler Dynamic
May 6, 2021 by Marisa Roffman
When Stabler (Christopher Meloni) brought Carisi (Peter Scanavino) into the LAW & ORDER: ORGANIZED CRIME world, he had a very specific mission in mind: he needed the ADA to help facilitate a shadow trial for Izak Bekher (Ibrahim Renno). In success, it would allow Izak to remain safe—and be their guy on the inside of Richard Wheatley’s (Dylan McDermott) operations.
Though the men were successful in tricking Wheatley, the danger remains if their secret gets out. But Scanavino thinks if push comes to shove, Carisi will be able to hold his own against the mob boss.
“Carisi is a born and bred New Yorker, [a] kid from Staten Island,” he points out. “So I think if he ever needs to get scrappy, he can.”
“I know a lot of people from Staten Island, and almost all of them has some kind of six degrees of separation to organized crime in New York City,” he continues with a laugh. “I’m sure there are people Carisi knows in that world, that he may not be in contact with, but he has access to. I’m just spitballing here, but I think it could get really interesting. Everybody’s got a cousin, everybody’s got an uncle out there who knows somebody…he’s scrappy, and if things devolve to the level of a street fight, I think he knows how to how to participate in that, as well.”
Things have different stakes in the next episodes of the LAW & ORDER franchise, when SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT and ORGANIZED CRIME crossover to dive deeper into the unexpectedly unresolved death of Simon (Michael Weston), the half-brother of Carisi’s friend/former boss Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay).
Though Scanavino notes Carisi and Stabler—who have had their tension prior to Carisi’s ADA stint on ORGANIZED CRIME—don’t really have much together in the SVU hour, “Trick-Rolled at the Moulin,” their dynamic is in a position to change going forward.
“I think that would be really interesting to acknowledge that now that Carisi and and Stabler have their own kind of personal relationship that’s outside of SVU,” he says. “[Now it’s,] ‘Oh, this is not something where it’s you, me, and Olivia are doing this, but it’s you and me.’ Carisi and Stabler have this other thing [on their own]. And that’s something that’s fraught with possibilities, because when you take two new characters and you put them together, their dynamics are going to feed off each other and they’re going to have conflict and you’re going to have to resolve that conflict, because we’re all on the same team, but we have different styles. And I think it opens up a lot of possibilities.”
When that develops is TBD, though, as the plan was for Scanavino to only appear in the one episode of ORGANIZED CRIME’s first season.
“[A return is] definitely something that I’m open to,” he says. “It’s fun to try things, and have the safety of it all being under the umbrella of LAW & ORDER, but put your character in different situations with different people and get out of your comfort zone. That’s always fun to me, as an actor, and for the character, I’d imagine.”
