The FBI Cast, EP Tease the Team’s Showdown with Vargas
May 25, 2021 by Marisa Roffman
FBI’s third season comes to a close as the team has to contend with a familiar villain: Vargas (David Zayas), the criminal who blackmailed his way out of custody by endangering Elise (Vedette Lim).
“He’s back in New York for a family reason,” FBI boss Rick Eid previews. “We get him into custody, and he has the same terrifying intensity as last time, if not more so. This is a man who thinks ten steps ahead. He’s captured and he reveals he has three bombs ready to go off in Grand Central Station if he’s not released…this was a plan he had in place just in case he got caught. When he left Mexico, he put these bombs on a timer that only he can disable, just in case.”
Naturally, his chaos draws a lot of attention from law enforcement. “We bring on all the guns to go after Vargas,” Zeeko Zaki (who plays FBI agent Omar Adom Zidan, AKA OA) says. “The biggest thing is just showing that one villain can really have his hands [in], and be responsible for, the domino effect that is other crimes and other villains…and how many other cases we’ve dealt with have had to do with him or he’s been tied in somehow.”
“The most exciting part about familiar villain is we get to jump right into page 20 of the book versus starting at the beginning,” he continues. “So hopefully that allows everybody to come up to speed really quickly and just be locked in and enjoy the ride.”
For Isobel (Alana De La Garza), who ultimately made the call that led to him going free, it’s personal.
“Vargas is her number one nemesis,” De La Garza notes in the video below. “She wants to get this guy—he got away with doing that to her friend and co-worker, and putting her job in jeopardy, really. So I think she goes to bed thinking about how she is going to find this man, someday.”
“And in this episode, she has a chance to get him; to really get him,” she continues. “But he’s got some tricks up his sleeve, and what’s she going to do about it? How is she going to handle that? So that was a really fun to journey read and figure out how to play.”
“They’re all committed to bringing this guy to justice, but no one more so than Isobel,” adds Eid. “This is her first chance to get him, to redeem herself, get revenge and find closure, in some ways, for Elise. And restore her reputation.”
Unfortunately for the team, the ramifications of Vargas’ last go-round with them had a much more complicated fallout than they anticipated.
“We find out in this episode there’s a new boss in town, and the reason Isobel was passed over was because of what happened with Vargas,” Eid teases. “The big boys in DC weren’t thrilled with how it went down. She’s got a lot to prove and she pulls out all the stops to make it happen.”
“There was a bit of a backlash that we didn’t really hear about amongst the higher ups in relation to how they thought about Isobel’s [actions and] whether or not she made mistakes,” Jeremy Sisto (who plays Assistant Special Agent in Charge Jubal Valentine) adds in the video below. “From our standpoint, she didn’t: she saved lives. They might see that and say, well, it was an unsuccessful result. Could she have could she have actually accomplished a different result? Could somebody else have accomplished a different result? And so my ex-girlfriend, [Rina,] comes into play, and is suddenly in a superior position to Isobel.”
Which, naturally, leads to some awkward dynamics between the trio as they try to navigate their new working situation.
“There’s a lot of tension between Rina and Isobel,” Eid allows. “And Isobel and Jubal. And Jubal and Rina. So it’s Jubal stuck in the middle of these two powerful, strong women.”
But, ultimately, “the whole team will come together in this action-packed episode,” De La Garza teases. “Do they catch the big fish? Does Vargas get his due diligence that he deserves?”
Outside of Vargas, “our world’s growing, as you know, [with upcoming series] FBI: INTERNATIONAL,” Zaki teases. “So we get to play in that space, and bring attention to the fact that some crimes, to solve them, you have to cross state and country borders. So it’s really exciting for us just to expand our world and to hopefully portray the intensity of the FBI, as it plays to the entire world instead of just New York, like we have been doing.”
Plus, Eid teases, “we leave the audience something romantic to ponder over the hiatus.”
