Terry Crews on His AMERICA’S GOT TALENT Golden Buzzer and Saying Goodbye to BROOKLYN NINE-NINE

AMERICA’S GOT TALENT host Terry Crews gave martial arts group World Taekwondo Demonstration Team a big vote of confidence on the Tuesday, June 15 episode of the NBC series: he pushed his Golden Buzzer for them.

“They proved that human beings can fly,” Crews told reporters on a conference call. “It was like standing at a sawmill—there was so much wood flying everywhere. I was like, ‘What is happening?’ And it didn’t stop: it kept getting better and better and better. And when you thought you saw something amazing, they were topping themselves, right in the act. It blew me away.”

“I was like, we’ve never seen anything like that; it was like a movie, watching that live,” he continued. “Everything you love about action movies and what action is, they did that on stage. It was poetic. You would think choreography is just involved in dance, but that was like a dance, an exhibition of beautiful talent. I had to give them the Golden Buzzer.”

And with a singular Golden Buzzer to hand out per season, Crews acknowledged the desire to press for them escalated during their performance.

“There were several moments that were building to it,” he said. “When the guy came out and did that whole fight scene, and then when the ladies came out and were just as badass…I was like, ‘No one will ever see this again. Oh my God, I’ve never seen anything like this.’ I’m already thinking Golden Buzzer, and then they kept topping themselves when they threw this guy 40 feet in the air and he literally kicked six different blocks, I was like, this is insane. He’s like walking on these wooden blocks while he’s kicking ’em. I’m like how is this even possible?”

“And then he lands on his feet!” he continues. “I would just tumble and do a faceplant, you would probably have to cover me up. How do you recover from a 40-foot fall? That’s what I knew. I was like, ‘I don’t care what the judges say, they’re going to the Lives. This man risked his life to do that!'”

Outside of AGT, Crews just had his own milestone: his long-running comedy, BROOKLYN NINE-NINE, just wrapped its eighth and final season.

“I’m even in a little depression right now, because what I feel like [is being] in third grade and moving away from all your best friends; that’s the only way I can really put it,” he acknowledged. “I’m going through it even right now. Last week, that’s it. Almost nine years with this group; I love each and every one of them. They’re my family. I don’t have any other speed. I’m very passionate about everything.”

Though BROOKLYN NINE-NINE has had a bit of a roller coaster experience during its run—including a move from Fox to NBC, and a more than year hiatus in the aftermath of a global pandemic and the nationwide conversation around police reform—Crews admitted he was thankful they got the chance to wrap things up on their own terms.

“We ended it perfectly,” he said. “I’m not giving any spoilers, but my goodness, everyone is going to be so happy. We could not have done a better way to end it. It is so beautiful.”
