LAW & ORDER: SVU Shocker: Jamie Gray Hyder and Demore Barnes to Exit
September 3, 2021 by Marisa Roffman
LAW & ORDER: SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT will be saying goodbye to two series regulars in season 23: Jamie Gray Hyder and Demore Barnes are exiting the NBC drama, Give Me My Remote has learned.
Both actors first joined the long-running series in season 21: Hyder’s Officer-turned-Detective Kat Tamin met the squad as a member of Vice, before she transferred into SVU a few episodes later; Barnes’ Chief Garland was brought in to replace Chief Dodds (Peter Gallagher). Hyder became a regular in season 21, while Barnes was promoted in season 22. (The latter also appeared on an episode of ORGANIZED CRIME in the SVU spinoff’s first season.)
The season 22 finale foreshadowed trouble for Garland, who was punished by his bosses for attempting to enact change in the NYPD—which also took a physical toll on his health.
“Garland maybe thought the world was going to change, and he’s dealing with a world that is resistant,” SVU showrunner Warren Leight previously teased. “And that might be a starting point for us for next season.”
Hyder and Barnes’ final appearances on the show will be during the SVU season 23 two-hour premiere.
Will you miss Kat and Garland?
