SONGLAND Won’t Return for Season 3 on NBC
September 20, 2021 by Marisa Roffman
SONGLAND won’t be returning to NBC—at least for now—Give Me My Remote has learned.
The songwriting competition series ran two seasons, with its last episode airing June 2020. A source also cautions the show could eventually be revived in the future on another NBC Universal network or platform.
In each episode, producers Ryan Tedder, Ester Dean, and Shane McAnally worked with budding songwriters to craft a song for the hour’s musical superstar act. Then the performer/group would choose a song that they would record and release as a single. (John Legend, the Jonas Brothers, Meghan Trainor, H.E.R., and Boyz II Men were among the artists who appeared on the series.)
SONGLAND found notable success in season 2, when Lady A’s chosen single, “Champagne Night,” was sent to radio stations, hit the number one spot on the US iTunes sales chart, and was included on the deluxe version of their album “Ocean.”
The series also helped bring Nick Jonas to THE VOICE.
“The Jonas Brothers did SONGLAND [in 2019],” THE VOICE (and SONGLAND) showrunner Audrey Morrissey told reporters in 2020. “We got to see firsthand how musical he is on SONGLAND. And that brought him top of mind [when we needed a new coach].”
When the show was wrapping up season 2, Morrissey told Give Me My Remote that she was hoping its smaller scale of production could help it continue on amidst the new COVID safety restrictions.
“What I’m hoping is that shooting SONGLAND is actually inherently COVID-friendly,” Morrissey said at the time. “We have no audience, it’s a rather small crew. We can space the writers, guest artists, and producers out in their chairs more. And we could have the songwriter stay a safe distance away. I actually think it’s one of the more inherent COVID-friendly shows to produce.”
A rep for NBC had no comment.
