As LAW & ORDER: SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT stars Demore Barnes and Jamie Gray Hyder said their on-screen goodbyes in the season 23 premiere double-header, SVU boss Warren Leight took to social media to praise the departing actors.
“We were proud to help create the characters of Christian Garland and Kat Tamin,” he wrote. “We were privileged to work with [Barnes] and [Hyder]. It’s been a joy to become their friends. We already miss writing for them, and working with them. Godspeed.”
A few words of gratitude. We were proud to help create the characters of Christian Garland and Kat Tamin. We were privileged to work with @DemoreBarnes and @JGHyder. It's been a joy to become their friends. We already miss writing for them, and working with them. Godspeed.

Executive producer Julie Martin echoed the sentiment: “Love and appreciation and heartfelt thanks to [Barnes] and [Hyder] for bringing these characters to vivid life. As [Leight] said, we miss Kat and Chief Garland already. Thank you for navigating a tough and emotional farewell.”
Both stars joined the series in season 21, with Hyder becoming a regular that year and Barnes being promoted in season 22. They exited—under different circumstances—in the second hour of the premiere block, “Never Turn Your Back on Them.”
