CHICAGO P.D.: Marina Squerciati Previews Burgess’ Tough Recovery Process
September 28, 2021 by Marisa Roffman
In the aftermath of her kidnapping and attack, CHICAGO P.D.’s Burgess (Marina Squerciati) finds herself trying to figure out how to handle what comes next on the Wednesday, September 29 episode, “Rage.”
“If she didn’t have Makayla to live for, I think it would be a much harder, steeper climb,” Squerciati admits. “But she’s gotta snap out of it quicker: A mom doesn’t get sick days, a mom doesn’t get mental health days. And so I think that she’s working as hard as she can to snap out of it, whether that means she’s just going to hide it and fake it until she makes it for Makayla[‘s sake], or really just double-time her efforts [to really recover].”
Adding to the complications? Burgess is trying to figure out whether she even wants to return to work.
“I don’t think she knows if she wants to go back,” Squerciati says. “That ability to run into a fire, so to speak, to run towards the bullets—I don’t know that she knows that she has that. The only way to find out is to be in the situation, and the idea of running towards bullets right now is just unfathomable to her. And that’s what first responders do they run towards danger.”
To that end, when Burgess decides to take a leap, CHICAGO P.D. boss Rick Eid previously teased she “not only needs to recover from her physical wounds, but from her emotional wounds. Ruzek is definitely there to help. But, sometimes, Ruzek tries to help too much.”
