NBC Orders LAW & ORDER Revival
September 28, 2021 by Marisa Roffman
The LAW & ORDER franchise has expanded in an unexpected way: NBC is reviving the mothership for a 21st season. CHICAGO P.D. and FBI boss Rick Eid is set to run the new series.
“There are very few things in life that are literally dreams come true,” said creator Dick Wolf in a statement. “This is mine.”
“LAW & ORDER is quite simply one of the most iconic shows in television history, and the idea of continuing its legacy and partnering with Dick on an all-new season is nothing short of exhilarating” said Susan Rovner, Chairman, Entertainment Content, NBCUniversal Television and Streaming. “This is great news for NBC as well as TV fans everywhere.”
“The return of the flagship LAW & ORDER series for a pivotal 21st season is a proud moment for Dick and a proud moment for us, his studio partners,” said Pearlena Igbokwe, Chairman, Universal Studio Group.
The series originally debuted in 1990 and ran until 2010, when it was canceled unexpectedly at season 20, on the cusp of breaking the then-record for a live-action series. (Since then, L&O spinoff SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT broke the record; it is currently in season 23.)
In addition to SVU (and its spinoff ORGANIZED CRIME), the franchise has also included CRIMINAL INTENT, TRIAL BY JURY, LOS ANGELES, and TRUE CRIME.
Planned spinoff LAW & ORDER: FOR THE DEFENSE quietly died this summer. Potential series LAW & ORDER: HATE CRIMES remains in limbo.
Wolf also boasts the ONE CHICAGO and FBI franchises on NBC and CBS, respectively.
