CHICAGO MED Post-Mortem: Andrew Schneider and Diane Frolov on the Fallout From the Party Reveal

[Warning: This post contains spoilers for the Wednesday, December 8 hour of CHICAGO MED.]

Will’s time as a double-agent, of sorts, has come to an end on CHICAGO MED…but things exploded pretty spectacularly at the hospital’s Christmas party.

Initially, Will (Nick Gehlfuss) thought his proof about the Vas-COM fraud would yield real results. But when the board opted to essentially cover themselves and take care of matters internally, he and Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson) were frustrated the authorities wouldn’t be called in. Still, Goodwin told Will to stand down—and then the authorities raided the holiday gathering, arresting Jessa (Angela Wong Carbone) and Cooper (Michael Rady), thanks to Goodwin’s tip.

And while Will did the right thing, his operation with Goodwin will have consequences for his relationships with his other colleagues.

“They’re not gonna like it,” CHICAGO MED co-showrunner Diane Frolov warns.

“They’ll feel left out or betrayed,” adds co-showrunner Andrew Schneider. “He’s had to be dishonest with them. It impacts his relationship with Stevie.”

With Will having some trouble with his coworkers, unfortunately, a possible ally will remain MIA for the foreseeable future.

“Ethan will be back in episode 12, but not in the hospital,” Schneider previews of Brian Tee’s character. “He’s dealing with his recovery and his rehab. And he has an emotional family-related story that he plays out with Dr. Charles [in 12].”

“Then he will still continue his therapy and return towards the end of the season,” Frolov adds.

But once he returns later in the season, “he’ll finish out with us,” Schneider says.

For as much drama as the doctors had in the hour, there was breakthrough for Charles (Oliver Platt) and Archer (Steven Weber). Though Archer regularly bristled at having psychiatric patients receive treatment in the ED, he got to experience a very small part of what living with a mental illness can be like, thanks in part to a device that allowed its user to replicate how it can alter reality.

And the writers hope it won’t just impact Archer’s outlook on the situation.

“We wanted to highlight the courage that people have in dealing with their mental illness,” Frolov explains. “We’re attempting an episode to get people to become more empathetic to people who struggle with mental illness.”
