GHOSTS: Utkarsh Ambudkar Previews Sam’s Reunion with Her Mom

Sam (Rose McIver) and Jay (Utkarsh Ambudkar) take a road trip on the Thursday, January 6 episode of GHOSTS, with a goal in mind: Reunite with Sam’s deceased mom, Sheryl (Rachael Harris), at the restaurant where she died.

“Rachael Harris is our guest star and she’s just so, so good,” Ambudkar previews. “And her and Rose are so good together. They have such great chemistry. They both approach the work the same way. They’re really well prepared. They really care. And then they’re just magic as mother and daughter. Oh my gosh. Bring the Kleenex for that episode. Holy sheesh. That is a really, really touching episode.”

For Jay, who can’t see Sheryl (or any of the ghosts), he’s along for the ride to be moral support.

“Jay, he loves his wife and he wants her to be happy,” Ambudkar notes. “Sam and her mom didn’t have the best relationship. Jay’s trying to help, as always. Jay tries to bring them together, for better or worse…I think Jay is trying his best to help Sam and her mother reconcile.”

In addition to possibly giving Sam a little closure, the episode also was a notable first for the actors. While most of the series has taken place at Sam and Jay’s manor/eventual B&B and the surrounding grounds, the new location allowed for new ghosts and living people to bring into the mix.

“It was the first time we worked with a lot of background,” Ambudkar says. “Just watching everyone trying to figure out what the hell is going on—who can we see, who can’t we see? Because we go to a restaurant, but there’s ghosts everywhere. So it’s just funny to watch actors come on the show, our guests, and try and figure out what their [own] rules [are]. It’s really fun.”
