NEW AMSTERDAM: Tyler Labine Teases Reynolds Being ‘In The Doghouse’ and a ‘Topical’ Case for Iggy

With NEW AMSTERDAM’s doctors struggling under the rule of Dr. Veronica Fuentes (Michelle Forbes), a small group formed a Resistance, rebelling against the restrictions in place.

But things blew up in a January episode, when Reynolds (Jocko Sims), worried about the risk to the patients, revealed the group to Veronica.

“The immediate emotional response to that is anger and outrage,” Tyler Labine, who plays Iggy, explains in the video below. “But I think from an Iggy point of view, which maybe we could all take a little more often, he tries to see the humanity in people. Even in that scene, when [Reynolds] was leaving the room and everyone was glaring at him, I found a moment to look at him, with more sort of curiosity than anger. Just…’I wonder where he’s coming from?’ As we know, he’s a good man who was coming from a place of wanting to do the right thing, and keep people safe. And, also, everyone’s really kind of flailing without Max there, you know? So he’s just trying to do the right thing.”

“He got blindsided by a lot of big decisions,” Labine continues. “And ultimately did the right thing. We will eventually come back together—the DamFam is strong—but he’s in the doghouse, for sure.”

As Iggy contends with losing that newfound group, the Tuesday, February 22 hour, “Two Doors,” has to juggle a very delicate situation with Robert Wilkinson (Lee Tergesen) and Drew Wilkinson (Rarmian Newton), a father-son duo who have very different takes on a big trauma.

“It was very topical for me, and I think it will be for a lot of people,” Labine acknowledges. “A father and son come in having a lot of complications arise from the fact that his son was in a mass shooting…and the father doesn’t believe that he was; he thinks it was all staged. And I think the bottom line for Iggy—and I think some of us can relate to this: we feel like we’ve lost people to the internet.”

“It’s a really topical, and really tricky, emotional storyline,” he continues. “I’m proud of it and proud of the way we did it. I’m proud of the way [series star] Ryan Eggold directed the situation. I think people are really gonna feel impacted by it.”

For Labine, it was also a unique experience filming the scenes. “It was such a neat room, because Lee is a vet, a consummate pro,” Labine gushes. “I kept forgetting—and I’m a pro, too; I’ve been doing this for, like, 35 years—but I kept doing that thing where I kept forgetting I was in a scene with him. Especially when it wasn’t my coverage, I was just watching him. He would make all these little choices, these very strong, but subtle, nuanced choices. And then the young man playing the son…I could just see him figuring things out and learning what we could do. And having Ryan help direct him—there was just a neat energy to the scenes, because we had Lee there.”
