GHOSTS and GREY'S ANATOMY

GREY’S ANATOMY – “Let’s Talk About Sex” – Bailey recruits the interns to create a series of social media videos informing teens about sexual health. The videos, filmed at Grey Sloan in front of a group of high schoolers, hit home as a student has medical complications during her visit. Elsewhere, Meredith and Maggie learn something new about Zola on an all-new episode of “Grey’s Anatomy” airing THURSDAY, OCT. 20 (9:00-10:01 p.m. EDT), on ABC. (ABC/Liliane Lathan)

Let’s talk about Thursday night’s TV!

GHOSTS: Oh my God, Sass’ lie got so out of control. But the despite the ribbing from his friends, I found his story very sweet. Maaaaybe he should have filled in Sam and Jay before things got quite so big (a protest turning against you isn’t the best of days, nor is their still-new business—understandably—losing reservations), but it makes sense he wanted one tangible piece of his past to remain.

Thorfinn suddenly becoming very eco-friendly to impress Flower, only to realize he would be better served if the humans died out via global warming was funny. (As was Flower being annoyed by his about-face, only to acknowledge she might forget it anyway in a moment.)

GREY’S ANATOMY: The episode wasn’t subtle, but it was effective. I also wondered, multiple times, what the notes from Standards & Practices were. What negotiations did they have to do in order to talk so frankly about sex and pleasure, even using clinical words? (Longtime fans may recall Shonda Rhimes had to come up with “vajajay” in season 2 because you could only use the word “vagina” so many times on broadcast TV.) And with the medically induced abortion, were they allowed to explain it, but only show so much? I imagine it was a logistical nightmare.

But, again, the episode was fun. The interns getting forced to host the most awkward PSA about sex health was funny, because of course they would only connect with the teens when it stopped feeling scripted. And it was fun to see the characters do their little dancing in the hopes they went viral—especially Harry Shum Jr., who started off as a professional dancer.

(Also, I can’t believe it didn’t dawn on me that of course Addison’s return would make her interaction with Derek’s nephew interesting. I still want to know more about this kid, including which sister is his mother.)

My heart broke for Simone, who is going through a very hard time—and as Meredith noted, something she knows all too well. Ellis and her illness was such a huge part of the early seasons of GA, so I expect they won’t follow the same beats, but I’m curious to see how much they play this.

With Zola now, clearly, being very gifted, I’m wondering if she’ll play into how/why Meredith eventually leaves the canvas…? Presumably, the show will be saving a couple of Ellen Pompeo’s contracted episodes for the end of the season in case it’s the end-end, but right now it really feels like her exit could be almost anything.
