THE VOICE: Kate Kalvach on Overcoming the Live Show Technical Issues
November 15, 2022 by Marisa Roffman
When THE VOICE’s Kate Kalvach started her take on Shania Twain’s “You’re Still the One” on the Monday, November 14 live show, she quickly realized something was wrong.
Viewers could see see Kalvach gesture to her ear a few times during the start of the song, but it wasn’t until she completed the number she was able to explain what was going on. “My voice was not in my ears,” Team Camila’s Kalvach told host Carson Daly.
“For anybody at home that doesn’t know, her voice not being in her ears means she’s relying on the echo-y chamber of the room,” Camila Cabello explained. “You handled that like a total pro.”
After the show, Kalvach explained to Give Me My Remote what was going through her mind when she realized things had gone awry.
“When I first started singing, my voice wasn’t in my ears at all, but I could hear the band,” she says in the video below. “So I knew my pack was working and my actual in-ears were working. And then when my voice came in, like halfway through the song, it was so light like I couldn’t hear myself at all…there was a lot going through my head. I was like, first of all, just power through; you’ve got to finish this performance. Of course, it’s live so we don’t have the chance to rerecord it or anything.”
“It was definitely a little flustering watching it back,” she continues. “I see in my eyes, so many wheels are turning in my head during that moment. But it all worked out. I made it through and didn’t collapse on the stage. So that’s a good thing.”
