FBI: INTERNATIONAL: Derek Haas on Raines Going Undercover and Vo’s Unexpected Feelings
January 3, 2023 by Marisa Roffman
The Fly Team may have a new headache in the form of Dandridge’s (Michael Torpey) over-meddling, but there’s still a case to solve when FBI: INTERNATIONAL returns on Tuesday, January 3.
“[It’s] Raines-centric, where he goes undercover,” FBI: INTERNATIONAL boss Derek Haas tells Give Me My Remote. “There’s a burglary ring and he has to embed himself in [group]. And when you get to write on this show, what’s fun is it’s not just a murder mystery each week, it’s not just a human drama—sometimes you get to write a kick-ass action movie. And that’s what the next episode back is to me: we just went crazy.”
“I started with doing [the screenplay for] 2 FAST 2 FURIOUS, and this episode’s called ‘Wheelman,'” he continues. “And we got to have Raines as the wheelman in a burglary ring. It was a really fun episode to make, and I can’t wait for people to see it.”
While Raines (Carter Redwood) embraces his new undercover persona, he is unaware of something brewing within his own team. When Vo (Vinessa Vidotto) watched Raines and his new girlfriend embrace in a 2022 episode, she had a very interesting look on her face. But what did that actually mean?
“I saw that, too,” Haas jokes. “I mean, that look said to me that maybe she really likes Raines from a professional standpoint, obviously, over a season and a half. But is there something more?”
“They work really closely together,” he continues. “And Maya is certainly a new romantic relationship in Raines’ life. We hinted to the fact that there haven’t been a lot of second dates or third dates for Raines, because he just has made his way through Europe. So the fact that she’s sticking around…I think, Vo, maybe, has some feelings that she doesn’t even know she has.”
Though Vo knows Scott (Luke Kleintank) and Jamie (Heida Reed) previously had a relationship, she won’t be leaning on her colleagues for insight or support.
“I think she’s going to keep it to herself for now,” Haas previews. “And other outside events are going to come to a head that will shine a light on that relationship she has with Raines for her. It’s oftentimes when you’re put in the pressure cooker when the truth gets told. And so I think that’s a place we’ll be headed.”
As FBI: INTERNATIONAL heads into the second half of its season, this will also mark the final batch of episodes for Haas, who will be exiting the series when season 2 wraps. And while this show is still in its relative infancy, he hopes the show continues for many, many years beyond his tenure. (The show has already been renewed for the 23-24 season.)
“I hope that it’s these characters and this dynamic that people respond to [that keeps fans hooked],” he says. “In my history of working on CHICAGO FIRE and those early years of CHICAGO P.D., the tried and true compass that I’ve certainly run on, and foster is, the idea that you’re watching a family. Maybe not blood family, but a family that works together and cares about each other.”
“And with INTERNATIONAL, the Fly Team, we have a foundation where here’s a group of Americans who, for disparate reasons, ended up overseas in Europe,” Haas continues. “And then it’s almost like [they’re thinking], ‘We’re the outsider, so we have to circle up and protect each other.’ And I love that feeling and that chemistry. It’s definitely the chemistry that the actors have. So all I can say is the writing staff that luckily assembled here, that I helped to put together, is like a murderers’ row of just great writers. And they’re going to continue on with these characters. So I don’t think you’re going to miss a beat with me leaving, and I can’t wait to see where they continue on.”
