CHICAGO P.D.’s milestone 200th episode, “Trapped,” found Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati)—finally—coming to terms with her lingering PTSD…and taking steps to help herself.

The hour started off with Burgess and Adam Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger) at home with their daughter. But when a car backfired and triggered Kim’s PTSD—in front of Makayla (Ramona Edith Williams)—Burgess sought out a therapist.

Initially, Kim insisted to her therapist that she’s “been all right.” But, she acknowledged, a recent case brought some of the trauma of her shooting back up. So, she was there and she wanted to deal with it and “go back to being fine.”

“Trauma has a way of trapping you without you even knowing it’s sitting there,” her therapist pointed out.

Adam tried to talk to Kim post-therapy, asking her not to push him away—but they got derailed by a shooting. The duo jumped into action, hopping on the L train, where it appeared the victim and shooter were hiding out.

As Adam tried to track down the mysterious shooter, Kim tried to save the shooting victim; the kid died and she had a panic attack.



Determined to get justice, they found the victim’s family, and realized he had been trying to warn Kim about them…and a young boy, Lucas, who had been mistreated and was back home with them.

Intelligence ultimately found Lucas, but there was, naturally, more trouble first: Kim found him, hurt, in a well, and she went to save him…only for both of them to wind up trapped there. She was able to climb out, push off the cover, and get reception to save Lucas.

The hour ended with Kim back in therapy, acknowledging she needed help. “I can’t feel this,” she said. “Like I’m getting shot all over again. Like I’m bleeding out every time I hear a gun go off. I almost lost that boy.”

“I can’t be who I want to be with this,” she continued. “Not for my daughter. Not for Adam. And I can’t be a cop. They bench cops for this. I can’t…I can’t not do this job. I don’t ever want to not do this job. You said I’m trapped. But I can’t be trapped.”

“Okay,” her therapist said. “So we work on getting you free.”



And the show will dig into what that means for Kim—and Burzek—going forward.

“I am really excited about where it’s going,” Squerciati tells Give Me My Remote in the video below. “I think it’s going to go in a surprisingly different direction that no one’s expecting. I’m working on that script right now…texting Paddy all these ideas and he’s tolerating it.”

“I just think that we’ve been in this place of Burgess sort of having PTSD and being numb for so long that I think the dam has to break—and it will,” she continues. “And what comes out of that is going to be super interesting to the fans.”

And though the actors have occasionally struggled with the will they/won’t they of the Burzek relationship, they’re excited about the path their characters are on now.

“I think they’ve done a nice job in the last season or two of kind of taking something that she and I have been kind of spinning our wheels on for years…sometimes we feel like [makes an exaggerated sigh], ‘We’re doing this again?'” Flueger acknowledges. “Which happens in relationships…I think they’ve done a really nice job of finding us this space this season, and some of last season, where it just belongs to us. We don’t have to define it to you…We don’t have to define it to the audience. It belongs to them. It’s theirs, they’re comfortable with it. Maybe it’s not exactly what they want, but they’re comfortable with it. And I think that now it’s posed to morph and evolve again.”

“I think it’s all happening and evolving and moving on their time,” he continues. “In a way that isn’t some standard TV romance, but something that’s totally different and way more lifelike. Boy meets girl, puts ring on finger, live happily ever…that’s not the reality, that’s a fairy tale. And so I really enjoy the lack of fairy tale on our journey thus far. And I think that, you know, we still might have our happy ending, whatever that might look like.”
