About Last Night…AMERICAN AUTO, FBI: INTERNATIONAL, FBI: MOST WANTED, and More
March 15, 2023 by Marisa Roffman
Let’s talk about Tuesday night’s TV!
FBI: Loved seeing Scola be so there for Tiff, even if it was hard (though understandable) to see her push back on the notion her brother needed help. (Because, oh boy, he clearly needed it.) I’m glad she came around to realize this wasn’t something he could just brush off or get over without outside help; the situation at his old job could have escalated in a real, dangerous way, and Tiff is extremely lucky they were able to get there before the cops.
AMERICAN AUTO: I’d ask how could Wesley exist and function as a human, but A) sometimes he barely functions and B) I’m sure there are a dozen people just like him in real-life in that kind of position who are a billion times worse.
Jack and Sadie hooking up was such a funny mess…I really appreciate how the show has been slow-playing the possible romance. It’s extremely difficult to write a believable will they/won’t they, especially in 2023, but the show has done a good job of making it an element of the show without making it THE element of the show.
And, Katherine, I have so many questions and concerns. But also, my God, do not ever leave a digital trace like that.

FBI: INTERNATIONAL: I’m extremely torn on this episode, because while I think it was a really good idea on paper, I kept finding myself frustrated that Scott wasn’t a part of it. Not only was this a situation where one of his team members was in a very dangerous spot, professionally, but, uh, Scott and Jamie have a history. I want to see the drama of that, even if he was doing exactly what Vo did, but it was layered with the subtext of “are you doing this because you’re my boss or my ex?” Alas.
But Jamie and Ben’s relationship flamed out much faster than I expected. I don’t blame her for dumping him, but I figured it’d be around for at least another month or so.
THE VOICE: Okay, I was underwhelmed by this episode, audition-wise, outside of Tiana Goss. (I also can’t believe she was only a one-chair turn, and I’m curious if her audition was later in the process and people had run out of spots/were near the end of their team limit.)
Kelly Clarkson pulling out the lie detector for Carson Daly to administer on Blake Shelton was funny, in theory, but weird it wasn’t deployed when he was actually in the mix for anything…?
FBI: MOST WANTED: I loved how ambitious this episode felt. From the start, nothing felt comfortable, in a good way. We didn’t have the traditional open with the crime occurring and then the debrief. Because a couple of team members were on the scene—and the others were on their way—they just hit the ground running. By subverting our expectations, it kept us off-balanced and not sure what to expect either, in a really good way.
Man, that final scene with Barnes and her dad broke my heart a little bit. I’m glad they were able to fight it out a little bit, but, man, I wanted to hug her; it’s clear her father’s disapproval was weighing on her. And it has to be hard that she’s fighting for what she believes is right, but also sometimes it feels pretty helpless/hopeless. At least they got some ice cream out of it.
THAT’S MY JAM: The cynical side of me says there has never been a more fixed episode of the show. I get it, but…boy, it felt obvious.
That being said: Billy Porter singing “Stronger” as a gospel song? My lord! Patti LaBelle singing “Lady Marmalade” as gibberish? Incredible. Worth the bad taste from the rest of it.
