GHOSTS: Richie Moriarty Previews Pete’s Daughter’s Big Day
April 13, 2023 by Marisa Roffman
Pete (Richie Moriarty) discovers his daughter is getting married on the Thursday, April 13 episode of GHOSTS—and now he has to figure out a way to actually see her tie the knot.
With Pete trapped at the B&B, it’s up to Sam (Rose McIver) to convince Laura (Holly Gauthier-Frankel) that Woodstone is the right location for her big day. But there is one thing on their side…a mistake Pete made, back when he was still among the living.
“Pete has a past indiscretion that he is carrying a lot of shame about, which is very funny,” Moriarty teases to Give Me My Remote. “It’s truly the dumbest indiscretion, the most inconsequential indiscretion. But for Pete, there’s a moment in the episode where he’s like, ‘It’s my greatest shame.’ It’s very funny to learn the details of it and to learn that actually this thing that happened 40-plus years ago, it’s going to provide him an opportunity to see his wife and see his daughter get married.”
“It’s a very funny episode,” he continues. “When we read this script, originally, I was like, ‘This is so dumb, in the best way.’ That’s, by the way, one of the highest compliments I can pay to any script: ‘This is so stupid, it makes me laugh so hard.’”
Once Laura decides to give the B&B a chance, the group has to get into the nitty-gritty of wedding planning.
“There’s a very funny scene in the episode where he’s essentially trying to plan this wedding with his wife via Sam,” Moriarty previews. “Very often parents are way too involved in the wedding planning process. And he is being reminded very quickly that, ‘Oh, yeah, I mostly don’t agree with my wife about a lot of things.’ They’re butting heads about everything, including a flower selection, which comes to play a bigger part in the episode.”
“It’s very funny, because there’s a real frustration that he can’t just voice his opinion directly to his wife,” he continues. “You’ve got to do it through Sam, who has to be very coy, and has a difficult time backing up why she feels so strongly about a song choice or a flower choice or a color scheme.”
As Pete’s frustrations with his wife rise, “there’s a lot of fun kind of tips to the cap of like, hey, this guy didn’t have a great marriage,” Moriarty allows. “You know, when all is said and done, these two probably shouldn’t have been together.”
And while Pete has been dead for a while, he only recently learned his wife had been cheating on him with his best friend…and subsequently married the man after Pete’s death.
“People say like time heals,” Moriarty says. “And I think this guy has a lot of distance from his marriage…and obviously, a different form—40 years have passed; we’re all different after 40 years have passed. So who knows how amplified Carol is from what he remembers?”
“But, of course, it’s going to help him move on when he sees this woman that he’s not necessarily jiving with,” he continues. “They are clashing on every decision about this wedding. I think there’s a real feeling within him that, yeah, this was not the romantic, perfect marriage that I maybe made it out to be in the first few years after my death. With some time and distance and reminders, he’s realizing that this wasn’t perfect. So maybe there is something more perfect for me in this afterlife that I can discover down the road. I think it is a bit of an invitation to go try to find love again, in a different way, now that you’re more cognizant of what was imperfect about your first marriage.”
Of course, Pete isn’t the only one having a big week in the episode: The comedy brings back Crash (Alex Boniello), the headless ghost…and Alberta (Danielle Pinnock) and Isaac (Brandon Scott Jones) work together to figure out how the heck he lost it.
“One of the things I love so much about this show is it’s a big cast,” Moriarty says. “So you get to see different permutations of the cast all the time in different storylines together, and Isaac and Alberta have such a great dynamic in this episode. I didn’t get to shoot any of it with them, because it’s really a totally separate storyline, but I remember them being so excited as we were shooting during this week, and they were like, ‘Oh my gosh, this is such a fun story. And we’re finding such great moments. And it’s like a classic interrogation.’”
“So I love that the writers were able to not only work Crash back in, but also provide such an opportunity for Pony and Bangs, as they’re calling themselves, to really hit it off in a way that the audience hasn’t seen before,” he continues. “They collaborate in a brand new way. And Danielle and Brandon are so funny. It was so fun to see this episode because I didn’t see any of their scenes being shot when we did this episode. It’s so fun to see the stuff that they were so excited about. And it really came together so well. They’re both such geniuses, and it’s really, really great to see that the B-story in this be as strong as it is.”
