GHOSTS shocked its viewers in the penultimate episode of season 2 by revealing that—spoiler alert!—Alberta (Danielle Pinnock) was killed by Hetty’s (Rebecca Wisocky) son.

“It was a jaw-dropper, for sure,” Wisocky tells Give Me My Remote. “None of us had any idea it was coming. We’re so happy that we took this journey, and brought it to some sort of conclusion with Alberta’s murder mystery. She’s certainly deserved that and deserved that storyline.”

Personally, Wisocky acknowledges she was “very happy for the chance to get to work with Danielle some more.”

“One of the things that I think our show does very well is it’s able to be this silly romp of a comedy,” she notes. “It’s very fast-paced. And it can set up situations between these ghost family members that are gonna have very high stakes and are very real. I mean, we’re speaking about life and death and regret and shame and all the reasons why we have not yet been sucked off.”

Trying to figure out how Hetty kept this secret for so long “was a challenge, honestly,” Wisocky acknowledges. “And it was a bit of a challenge to kind of reverse engineer that information for Hetty’s character, in particular, given all of the conversations that she’s shared with Isaac, about his journey, and given all the conversations that she shared with Samantha about her son and her family. It’s a lesson that—there are always more skeletons in the closet in Woodstone Mansion. And I imagine more will be revealed.”

“But I did a lot of thinking about how to justify that for myself as an actor,” she continues. “I did a lot of thinking about that type of secret that you hold on to for so long that…it kind of becomes your truth. And that’s the way I made my peace with it. I mean, these characters, some of them, have been living together as a family for hundreds of years. You would think that they would have gotten to the bottom of all of their drama by now. But that’s not how secrets work. The Joes and our wonderful team of writers continue to throw us more twists and turns. And there’s a great big one coming.”

The actors did enjoy witnessing the fan reaction to the huge twist play out via social media. “It was great fun,” Wisocky says with a laugh. “It’s wonderful and so gratifying that the fans have become so invested in these characters. It was so humbling and cool. They all have formed such deep relationships with us. So there was a wide range of emotions.”

“Some people think that she made it all up,” she continues. “Some people were very complimentary of those scenes between Hetty and Alberta, and how complex they were. The episode was directed by Christine Gernoan, who is one of our regular directors and a big favorite with us. She handled that whole arc and the B-storyline, which is so ridiculously funny, between the Three Stooges stumbling into the Nigerian prince scam. Again, our show does this so well: The juxtaposition between the ridiculous and the deeply heartfelt. And the Joes—our showrunners Joe Port and Joe Wiseman—wrote that episode and I think they did a great job. But the main opinion [from fans] is, ‘Oooh, they’ve got a lot of shit to talk about!’…And I think the writers will take us on that journey in season 3. I’m hoping they do.”

But before then, there’s a (very big) season finale to contend with.

“We haven’t yet seen what it means in this society of ghosts at Woodstone Mansion to actually settle a dispute this large, to settle a conflict this deep,” Wisocky teases. “You’ll see in the episode [the ghosts] figure that out.”

Of course, there’s also a bigger issue at hand: “The future of the house itself is in jeopardy,” Wisocky teases, alluding to the potential Woodstone heir who shows up trying to stake her claim on the home. “That’s the definition of a great cliffhanger—the very ground beneath your feet is in question. And I think that that’s true from top to bottom for the finale.”
