When CHICAGO P.D. season 10 concluded, Ruzek’s (Patrick John Flueger) life was hanging in the balance after he was shot while working his undercover case.

In the initial batch of photos released post-episode, there were shots of an unconscious Ruzek being watched over by his (work and romantic) partner Burgess (Marina Squerciati)…but the scene didn’t make what aired on NBC.

“Aw, yeah, it was a really nice scene; they were really wonderful in it!” CHICAGO P.D. showrunner Gwen Sigan gushes to Give Me My Remote. “It was him waking up, basically. It was her having to tell him what had happened with the Becks and that we did not get there in time—and that idea that she did not believe we saved this kid. So it was about Cal, and that Cal might be a little doomed after what he witnessed and what had been implanted in his head. It was a good scene!”

And while Sigan is coy about if that good fate for Ruzek in the deleted scene translates to him being OK in the season premiere, she does acknowledge things are rough for Intelligence, overall.

“I will say that we find the unit in a bit of transition—in a shaky transition,” she previews of the season 11 premiere. “We’re operating a couple of members down and Voight is trying to hold the unit together.”

One person who is sticking around (for a little bit) is Tracy Spiridakos. Though it was announced in October that Spiridakos would be exiting the show during season 11, she will actually be a part of the entire year.

“I’m very grateful, we get her the whole season,” Sigan shares. “We have her the whole time. So we will be able to tell a really nice story for her.”

“What we really want to concentrate on is that sort of emotional ride for [Upton] of when your life doesn’t turn out how you thought it would,” she continues. “And then you’re hit with struggle, when you’re hit with some sort of adversity, it brings up a lot for her that she’s maybe denied or hasn’t looked at from years past—even from her childhood. And so it brings up a lot and she’s got to make her way through and confront it to get to a better side at the other end. It’s really a story of growth and transition and new possibilities for Hailey Upton.”

CHICAGO P.D., Season Premiere, Wednesday, January 17, 10/9c, NBC
