After losing Whelan (Brent Antonello) in the season 3 finale of LAW & ORDER: ORGANIZED CRIME, the majority of the OCCB task force responded in the season 4 premiere…by nearly dying.

In “Memory Lane,” the team tries to track down a moving fentanyl lab—a task that has kept Stabler (Christopher Meloni) undercover for months. After his cover’s blown, he returns back to the OCCB…where Jet passes out from suspected fentanyl poisoning, and then Elliot and Reyes (Rick Gonzalez) are similarly exposed during a bust and need emergency medical treatment.

So what is going through Bell’s (Danielle Moné Truitt) mind as everyone around her had close calls…as she’s still trying to recover from the loss of Whelan?

“Oh, right—they all almost died in the first episode!” Truitt recalls with a laugh to Give Me My Remote in the video below. “Oh my God, that’s so funny.”

“I think for Bell, it’s like what would these people do without me?” she continues with a laugh. “How would any of them survive? Like, what is going on? I think that’s Bell’s major thought: What the hell is going on? There has to be something I can do to reel them in.”



For as arguably reckless as some of the members are, Truitt acknowledges she understands where they’re coming from. “Everybody is grieving,” she says. “Everybody’s going through whatever their coping mechanisms are and…when you’re grieving and you’re coping, you’re really not thinking about your own well-being…You’re just trying to make whatever the pain is go away. And so if that means running into danger when you have no [protection] like Reyes—why would you run in there with no hazmat suit?! We just had a conversation on why Stabler has a hazmat suit on, but you think that you are a superhero and you can run in there with no kind of protection?”

“I think Bell is [thinking] she can’t lose anybody else,” she continues. “That’s gonna drive her to her edge. That’s gonna drive her to the cliff.”

With a sigh, Truitt admits her character may have her work cut out for herself: “She’s gonna do her best to keep them all on track. That’s all she can do.”

Unfortunately for Bell, that’s not the only problem she has on her hands: Near the end of the hour, it was revealed that Jet and Reyes’ relationship has taken a romantic–or at least physical—turn.

With the task force only the trio of them for the past few months—and the duo only quasi-hiding their newfound affection—“I think Bell is aware of everything that’s going on in that office,” Truitt says. “So I think she’s seen some things; I don’t think she wants to assume anything.”

“But at some point, she is going to have a conversation with Jet and let her know, like, without letting her know specifics,” she continues. “She’s not gonna say it, but she’s gonna say it. Get it together. This is not something that you need to be involving yourself in.”



As Bell has proven time and time again, you really can’t put a lot past the sergeant, Truitt points out. “If she doesn’t know for sure, she has a feeling. She’s a grown woman. She has a child, she’s been married before; she’s lived life. And when you’re a leader, and you’re kind of governing over a group of people, it should be something that you see…that seems off, that’s off, and you kind of put things together. So I think she’s really good at that.”

“And she was a detective before she was a sergeant,” she continues. “I think people forget that: She was a detective and she was a damn good one, which is why she’s a sergeant now. So it’s not too hard for her to see things.”
