After saving teen Maddie (Allison Elaine) from her prolonged kidnapping experience, the ball is now in Carisi’s (Peter Scanavino) court on the Thursday, April 18 episode of LAW & ORDER: SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT, as the ADA tries to bring her kidnapper, George Brouchard (Patrick Carroll), to justice.

Complicating matters? The man who bought Maddie from Brouchard was killed and can’t testify against him.

“Well, poor Carisi, it seems like everything is always stacked against him,” Scanavino says with a laugh to Give Me My Remote. “The plea deal doesn’t seem like it’s going as planned…I think he thought it was gonna be a done deal considering that they caught the guy in the act, basically. But it turns out not to be that way. And it’s going to end up going to trial.” 

“It’s going to be a lot of twists and turns during the trial, of course,” he continues. “I think maybe he’s excited for it, but it’s definitely an uphill challenge for him.”

The case consumed the squad—especially Olivia (Mariska Hargitay), Carisi’s one-time boss—as they spent months trying to track the teen through multiple states…and also had to contend with Olivia’s guilt for seeing the girl moments after she was taken, without realizing what was going on. 

“I think he’s always going for the win, but obviously it has great importance to people that he’s close to professionally, but also personally,” Scanavino notes. “And I think maybe this case has come to symbolize the chance to do something right in a world gone crazy. He definitely wants to bring justice to Maddie and her family.”

The hour, “Combat Fatigue,” also marks a return to the courtroom for the series, after rarely utilizing that element of storytelling this season. 

“The courtroom scenes are different, particularly when he gets to cross-examine somebody, which also hasn’t happened too frequently,” Scanavino acknowledges. “That’s his world and that’s where you really get to see him act independently and kind of strategize in his own way. And that’s different than the investigation world, in the police world. That used to be [his world], as well, but it’s not so much anymore. It’s a totally different animal than the courtroom.  And I really do hope that there’s more [court] going forward.”

With the season gearing up for its final episodes (the series was recently renewed for season 26), a notable thing for Carisi will happen in episode 11 (airing May 2): a guest spot from former series regular Kelli Giddish, whose Amanda Rollins is married to the ADA. 

“Oh, it’s great…getting to do scenes with Kelli, it’s always just such a treat,” Scanavino says. “We’re so close personally, and I think that carries over [because] obviously we’re close on the show; we’re married [on SVU], we had a kid.”

“A lot of times in the show, you kind of might get a more straight-laced or official business [scene],” he continues. “It’s in the pursuit of a case and you don’t take it lightly. You’re gonna get more levity and just the personality of Carisi when he’s not an ADA or investigating something, but kind of more of a dad and a husband and see what their home life is like.”

The actor—who has been fantastic at finale-set teases in the past—did offer up a little hint about what fans can expect in the final hour of season 25, too: “Well, I’ll just say the season comes full circle. There’s going to be some faces that you recognize from past episodes.”
