FBI Post-Mortem: Zeeko Zaki on OA’s Vulnerability with Gemma

After struggling to open up to his girlfriend, Gemma (Comfort Clinton), OA (Zeeko Zaki) finally took a big step and let her in about his Army past on the Tuesday, May 7 episode of FBI.

“I think we all try to be as strong as possible in our lives,” Zaki tells Give Me My Remote. “And showing that vulnerability and opening up about your weaknesses can be an act of strength. It is really fun to play and really fun to show…to play a hero on television, and just to play one note of strength and vigor and not showing the vulnerable side—this isn’t the reality.”

“And so I just really love the opportunity to get to play such a vulnerable note, and to hopefully connect with some people in the real world that are dealing with or experiencing holding on to all of their issues,” he continues. “OA is just such a strong character and just to show the vulnerability as a part of that strength is really important.”

Due to the nature of ongoing network television storytelling, Zaki often finds out about his character’s backstory and big moves just before filming starts. “I do get to learn and watch sort of as an audience member and as a character, in real time, so there was no real conversation [with the writers] besides me just kind of taking it all in,” he says. But the actor reiterates “you do have to compartmentalize and you do have to wear different masks and things like that [in a job like OA’s]. And just because you’re wearing different masks or being a different person around different people doesn’t mean that any of those masks have to be bad.”

Though there are a few more episodes left this season, Zaki has dubbed this “the OA finale of season 6.” 

“We definitely get to dive back into the other characters [in the remaining episodes],” he says. “We get to go and see some of Jubal’s past and then, of course, we get to bring it full circle as a team in the finale.”
