THE ROOKIE: Alexi Hawley Teases ‘the Ultimate Paranoia Thriller’ Season 6 Finale

With the wide-spread conspiracy ramping up (and involving—at least—cops, therapists, and lawyers), THE ROOKIE season 6 finale (airing Tuesday, May 21) is “the ultimate paranoia thriller,” showrunner Alexi Hawley previews to Give Me My Remote.

“[Our cops are wondering] who can you trust?” he teases. “And also the tragedy of that: Obviously, Monica [is] using Blair—and you’ll find out sort of the machinations behind that relationship in the finale—[and they] have basically weaponized cops’ tragedies and secrets. Whether they’re either mining them for information or whether they’re blackmailing them to do things, it’s all sort of the worst you can imagine. And so that creates quite a culture of unknowns. Who can you trust, who can you not? Things come to a head in the finale in terms of how that’s gonna play out.”

As things escalate, the feds are called in—THE ROOKIE: FEDS, to be exact. Britt Robertson, Felix Solis, and Kevin Zegers reprise their characters (Laura, Garza, and Brendon, respectively) from the spinoff in the hour on a very important mission.

“That was a conversation I had almost immediately after we got the bad news about FEDS going away,” Hawley notes of keeping FEDS crossovers alive. (Hawley co-created the spinoff with Terence Paul Winter.)  “But I wanted clarity from ABC because I love those characters and those actors. [I asked] if they were available, and willing, could I keep them in our universe? And the answer was yes, which was great.”

“But then it became [us realizing] we need to tell a good story with them; we need to tell an exciting story with them,” he continues. “And so we didn’t feel a place for that [quasi-crossover] until the finale. Ultimately, things have escalated so much that by the end of [episode] 9, there’s so many unknowns inside the LAPD, that it feels warranted for the feds to get involved.”

And while the hour is high-stakes, there are personal beats in play, too. “You will see Lucy and Tim sitting in a police vehicle together for the first time since the breakup,” Hawley teases. “And there will be quite a dynamic action sequence with them involved in it. And then whatever sort of movement happens because of all of that—there’s a scene at the end that’s worth watching.”
