CHICAGO MED: Jessy Schram Previews ‘Turbulence’ for Hannah and Ripley, Plus Leaning into the ED’s Family Dynamic in Season 10

When CHICAGO MED returns for its tenth season on Wednesday, September 25 (at 8/7c), the series will be dealing with the fallout of Ripley (Luke Mitchell) being accused of attacking former patient Pawel (Kristof Konrad).

“We’re coming a month in after we’ve left [off in the finale],” Jessy Schram, who plays Hannah Asher, tells Give Me My Remote. “So some things have transpired, and I’m really curious to see where things go.”

For Hannah and Ripley, who have started a tentative romantic relationship, “there will be some turbulence there,” Schram teases. “And I think for me, as the actress, I’m really excited to discover and see how that will affect them as individuals within the hospital, as opposed to only just the two of them. But we’re still together, at least for now, with my knowledge, and we’ll see what happens from there. We’ve got a long season ahead of us.” (The ONE CHICAGO shows are expected to produce 22 episodes this season.)

Schram acknowledges that there is potential for any speed bumps between Hannah and Ripley, especially given his current trouble, to turn into deeper issues.

“Not only is she a professional having a personal relationship with one of her coworkers, but she’s also sober,” she points out. “So I think that when there’s chaos, we’ll see how that affects her and her strength within her sobriety as well as her work. Hannah’s always been really good about switching into place, switching it on and off for what she needs to do. She shows a lot of empathy for her patients, but she is also someone that is a ballbuster and turns on that strength and resilience and fighter in her whenever she needs to.”

“When it comes to Ripley, she was extremely confused when he just walked away without saying anything [at the end of the finale],” Schram continues. “And at the same point, this has been a theme with Ripley for Hannah: He has not been forthcoming about his feelings for her to his friend, Sully. There’s a lot of themes that this kind of [behavior] stays in track with. So…is this two steps forward and one step back? Is this one step forward and two steps back? I’m really curious to see how that unfolds. But right now, she’s confused as ever, and is very cautious. Because in her own life, her professional career, in her personal [life], her patients and her sobriety come first.”

One thing is for sure: Season 10 will have a new showrunner at the helm, with Allen MacDonald stepping in following the exit of longtime showrunners Andrew Schneider and Diane Frolov.

Prior to filming kicking off for the season Schram visited the writers’ room, “which was such a treat.”

“They’re very excited for this new season,” she says. “We’re really going to utilize the family dynamic within the hospital, really utilizing the relationships between the characters even more than we have in the past. It’s a very dysfunctional family, and I think that we will be playing that there’s a lot of love, but there is chaos and drama and arguments—but at the end of the day, they all come together with the same values and the same purpose and the same respect for each other.”

The team will also have to deal with the departure of Dominic Rains’ Dr. Crockett Marcel, too.

“Crockett, from the few scenes that we’ve seen [him and Hannah] have, was definitely someone that she trusted and was somebody that she could rely on,” Schram notes. “And she, to be honest, shared the most personal information with him than anyone besides Will Halstead about her mom and that passing. So I think that there is definitely going to be a hole from Crockett—and no one will ever fill his shoes…I know that Hannah Asher would support [why] needed to leave and I’m sure they’re talking consistently outside of work.”

“But we will have some new characters coming in,” she continues. “And just like a real hospital, there is a revolving door, and there’s new people and different dynamic shifts all the time. And I think that they’re going to stir up a lot of new relationships within the ED.”

The writers were also able to give her a bit of a tease about what’s in store for Hannah this season. “We will see a lot of really cool and important women’s health storylines for her [in her capacity as a doctor],” Schram says. “I’m really excited about some other things coming up. From what I’ve been teased in the writers’ room, there’s some really—if it stays the way that it’s projected to right now, and the pitch stays the same—there’s some really cool stuff coming up for her personally, as well.”

Off-screen, Schram has appreciated getting to dig into new layers of Hannah. “I feel like this past season, I was surprised at the versatility within her,” she notes. “I think we’ve seen her struggle and fight and survive a lot, and I think we’re starting to see her thrive. And now we’re starting to see other parts of her personality that weren’t based on just proving herself to others or to herself. So I think it’s been fun, the surprise of where her vulnerabilities lay…It’s going to be a very dynamic season, and I just couldn’t be more excited.”
