Let’s talk about Tuesday night’s TV!

BEAT SHAZAM: Oh, I felt very bad for Kylie and Austin. It felt like they were doing well and quasi-cruising through the head-to-head rounds, but then when it was up to them to name songs to build their bank (with no multiple-choice options), they could not get a song correct. I’m SO glad they walked away, though; I was worried they’d go for the final song and lose that, too. (And it turned out they didn’t know the last song, so a fantastic choice.)

AMERICA’S GOT TALENT: This is going to be a brutal cut, because it feels like some of the more interesting acts are going to get cut this week. Preemptively guarding myself for some tough eliminations…

THE QUIZ WITH BALLS: A solid game, but it felt like one of the tougher rounds of questions this season. And I don’t know if that was just my inexperience with certain things—the animals or spices—or it was just a bit more difficult. I would have destroyed the Beyoncé round, though.

HOMICIDE: LIFE ON THE STREET:

“Black and Blue”: I would watch Andre Braugher act in an interrogation room forever. “Three Men and Adena” is still my favorite episode of the show so far, but watching Braugher’s Frank go one-on-one with a suspect is pretty unparalleled as a viewing experience. Frank played every card—to the extent that even Tim was worried about him—but he got the confession. He got the breakdown. He got what he wanted.

Of course, this was made even more horrifying because Frank elicited a false confession. He knew it. He did it to prove a point and then left it in Giardello’s hands regarding what to do next: Do they take the confession from a young Black man and let the case go? Or do they actually pursue whether a cop was involved in their shooting?

Thankfully—for everyone/everything, including my sanity—Giardello did the right thing. They go after the real shooter…who just happened to be Kay’s ex.

I know I’ve mentioned this before, and I’m sure some of this is due to the era, but I so deeply hope Kay has something meaningful in this show that isn’t related to her love life or superficial things at some point soon. I know the bulk of the drama has frequently been on Tim and Frank’s shoulders, but it would be nice if she was allowed any kind of real depth.

(There, uh, sure are some guest stars in this episode.)

“A Many Splendored Thing”: Aww, Adrienne Shelly (WAITRESS forever.)

I do appreciate the show isn’t just dropping the Adena case, even if they’re basically stuck. They would continue to feel frustrated, continue to bring it up, because having it lingering over them would be torture. (Also torture: Watching Frank and Tim fight.)

If we’re going to go silly, I appreciate going this silly: Munch as a fifth wheel was perfect. (I mean, probably a nightmare for them all, but still.)

And, like, look…I like pens a lot. I can acknowledge I would never kill over one. But leave it to HOMICIDE to actually give a story like that layers and gravitas.
