AMERICA'S GOT TALENT, BEAT SHAZAM, and HIGH POTENTIAL

HIGH POTENTIAL – “Pilot” – A single mom with an exceptional mind is recruited to the LAPD Major Crimes unit, where her unconventional knack for solving crimes leads to an unusual and unstoppable partnership with a by-the-book seasoned detective. TUESDAY, SEPT. 17 (10:00-11:00 p.m. EDT) on ABC. (Disney/David Bukach)

Let’s talk about Tuesday night’s TV!

AMERICA’S GOT TALENT: Oh my God, the promo hell…no one recognized David Alan Grier?!

As for the show itself, it was really, really great. There are at least five acts who could/should win it all. It’s bittersweet when there are so many solid/deserving acts, because it means inevitably some really solid acts will be disappointed and let down.

(That being said, the directing for the first couple of performances was awful. Focusing on the judges for extended periods of time instead of Hakuna Matata Acrobats was bizarre—I thought something had gone wrong and they didn’t want to show the audience at home.)

BEAT SHAZAM: Two-hour blocks of game shows at this point make me a bit wary—I’m skeptical both will be good, even though you should end your season on a good note. Of course it didn’t shake out that way.

The first game was so much better than the second hour. (It’s insane there was a medical emergency on the flight there for the first responders?) But yay for a team beating Shazam, at least.

The second game, well…I literally face-palmed over the man getting “Fantasy” wrong. (I truly wish this was a joke or exaggeration.)

HIGH POTENTIAL: Pilots can always be a work in motion, and this one even more so: The person who created the series wasn’t the person initially running it and then another showrunner came in after that.

I think there are pieces of a solid show here, but I didn’t love the pilot as much as I hoped I might. The work environment? Great! Daniel Sunjata’s Karadec and Judy Reyes’ Selena were early standouts for me.

But…the home life didn’t work. I don’t for a second think it will (or should!) go away, but I truly hope they can balance it better as the season goes along, especially in crafting her as a poor woman. There was at least one moment that was unrealistic to the point of distraction in how they tried to portray the family’s money issues. Fingers crossed the kinks smooth out.
