MATLOCK liar

MATLOCK stars Emmy and Academy Award winner Kathy Bates as Madeline “Matty” Matlock, a brilliant septuagenarian who achieved success in her younger years and decides to rejoin the work force at a prestigious law firm where she uses her unassuming demeanor and wily tactics to win cases. Matty is assigned to Olympia (Skye P. Marshall), a senior attorney and key rainmaker with a thirst for justice, Olympia’s ex-husband, Julian (Jason Ritter), the son of the head of the firm, is intrigued by Matty and her clever skills. As Matty endeavors to establish herself in her new high-stakes world, she works alongside the firm’s younger associates – the charismatic Billy (David Del Rio) and the uber ambitious Sarah (Leah Lewis). MATLOCK is inspired by the classic television series of the same name. Premieres Sunday, Sept. 22, 2024 (8:00-9:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network and available to stream live and on demand on Paramount+.

[Warning: This post contains major spoilers for the MATLOCK series premiere.]

For months, the MATLOCK promotional material had to dance around the show’s big secret and twist ending.

“[Pre-air, CBS] led with protecting the twist and in every marketing meeting, they’re telling [us] how they’re protecting the twist, but also how they’re building a sense of anticipation,” MATLOCK showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman previously told Give Me My Remote. “And I feel like they do a great job. I love the promos. I feel like they really capture a lot of the spirit. They don’t give it away, but they tease just enough.”

But with the premiere now out there, CBS is having fun with the show’s actual plot: Matty (Kathy Bates) is not actually Madeline Matlock—her name is Madeline Kingston and she’s infiltrated the law firm to try and figure out who indirectly led to her daughter’s death.

And with that deception in mind, the network released cheeky new promotional images calling Bates a “liar,” “con,” and a “fraud”…
